Show MANY CIVIC IMPROVEMENTS. Mayor and City Council Wide Awike and Enterprising in Matters Pertaining to City. Tho Record is pleased to note the mnnv public imorovements that nre hflinf prosecuted bv the nresent cltv ndminifltratiort. which showB onter-tiriso onter-tiriso and public spirit on tho part of tho mavor nnd council. As examples notn tho following: Tho improvement on First North street, consisting of the removal of tho poles from tho center to tho side of tho street, tho grading and shalinp of tho street. This thorouehfaro now makes tho remninder of tho cltv look ashamed of itself. These improvements, improve-ments, however, are to bo extended lust as fast as tho revenues of the ity will pormit, and Majn street, from end to end, is to receive attention atten-tion next. This work will bo commenced commen-ced within a few days, and diligently prosecuted to completion. This alone will add fifty per cent to tho appearance appear-ance of the citv to tourists and others pnssincr through. As fast as possible the old log and lumber bridees in all parts of town are being replaced by substantial cement ce-ment culverts. It has been found that by using due care and discretion in the employment of labor, that these culverts can be constructed at a cost of little more than $25.00, or only a fraction more than the old unsightly, short-lived wooden kind. A considerable consider-able number of these culverts have already al-ready boon put in and ono by ono thoy will supplant the old kind until every street crossing has been supplied. Down at the city hall a good improvement im-provement has just been made in the moving of tho city cages to a more nrivato part of the building, from where there can bo no communication with the outside. This is a very necessary neces-sary change, as heretofore prisoners having sympathizers or allies on the outsido could bo supplied with all kinds of tools or weapons. The approaching aummor has suggested sug-gested the possibility of destructive fires to the city administration, and a quantity of fire hose and fire carta havo been ordered. These with the several additional fire hydrants recently re-cently installed in various parts of town, and the increased supply of water, should provide sufficient protection protec-tion against this demon. Tho matter of the disposal of gar-,bage, gar-,bage, which was ono of our most vulnerable vul-nerable spots in tho clean town contest con-test of last year, is being met by the construction of proper apparatus foi the destruction of this refuse and at a greater distance from the city than the old dumping ground. The foregoing, together with the-regular the-regular work of repairing leaks in the city water system, form sufficient work for the employes of the city, the office of water master and supervisor being particularly busy. In this connection con-nection it is only fair to say that the present incumbent in that office is doing splendid duty, and an increase of salary wouuld be commensurate with the service he is rendering. |
