Show l T IS IT TRIE? One point which, if true, is valW, has lieen urged against the adoption of national prohibition a this time. "A united public opinion," said Senator Sen-ator Lodge, "is the greatest factor in winning the war. Abolish all the breweries, and you will engender dissatisfaction dis-satisfaction and resentment " If that were true, the country might lose more than it would gain by prohibi- j tion. Rut is it true? Russia was far more wedded to its vodka than Amer- ' ica to its beer, yet war prohibition in Russia was phychologically profitable i as well as physically strengthening. When American communities are in disorder with popular discontent threatening violence, what do they do? They close the saloons. Evidently that is found to do just the oppisite of increasing populnr discontent. Rut the best denial of Senator Lodge's point is found in the state of Nebraska. Nebras-ka. Nebraska's saloons closed their doors a month after war was declared. Let the senator come to Nebraska and see whether the loss of their liquor and Nebraska was full of people who hud their habits to change causes a nation weakening discontent.
