Show MORE TEACHERS NEEDED FROM UTAH State Superintendent Cowans (alls Attention to Shortage of Pedagogue Peda-gogue Production Here. Salt Lake, Aug. 31. The state of Utah does not produce but half enough teachers, accordine; to Dr. E. G. Gowans, state superintendent of schools. The state should contribute its share of teachers to the schools of the country, for now we have to depend upon the other states to furnish furn-ish teachers for our schools and we do not send an equal quota to them. We are not doing our share in this work yet we have excellent facilities at our Stute Normul school at the University of Utah to produce leaders lead-ers in the teaching profession. Because of the present war there will be a great demand 'or teachers in the near future. Many teachers huve enlisted in military service and the schools will be handicapped. The young men and women of the state 1 should be far-sighted enough to see I this need and should train to meet it. In speaking of the advantages of j taking the educational work at the State University, Dr. Gjwans said, "Those people intending o be teachers teach-ers should attend the Uriversity of i Utah. It is the head of our educational educa-tional system and offers the work as outlined by the state bo:trd of educa tion. Upon completion of a course one does not have to take any state teacher's examination but is entitled to a certificate as he has more than met the requirements for a good teacher." The University has introduced several sev-eral new courses in the school of education ed-ucation this year, such ns rural education, ed-ucation, junior high school work, and has outlined the work in a clearer maimer placing more emphasis on the teaching major subject as well as all of the required work that has alwaya been presented. |
