The day was observed pnwtically as planned, except that the afternoon sports were eliminated, as hardly in keeping with the spirit and solemnity of the occasion, and the Knoch band was not included, due to the failure of the committee to notify them in time. The business part of Main street was decorated with flas and hunting in honor of the occasion, and there were a larjfe number of visitors present pres-ent from the other settlements of the county, although not all of the recruits re-cruits were abla to come in for the ceremonies. In the procession that took place at I p. m., the soldiers, minus uniforms, wire mounted on horseback, and were preceded by the combined bands, ami followed by a company of young ladies la-dies bearing Red Cross badges, a party par-ty of farmers bearing farm products in their arms and a banner which read "Tliese Will Win the War." Then came a loiitf line of automobiles. The ceremonies in the tabernacle at 3:00 p. m. were very impressive, from Hie rendition of the beautiful hymn, j "The Flag Without a Stain," by Mrs. Annette Rettensun, and chorus, to the beautiful sentiment read by Mrs. , M. J. Macfarlane on "Our Roys." The speaking and music were very appropriate, and everone went out of the building with hearts mealowed and i a prayere on their lips for the brave recruits. Mr. Randall I,. Jones acted as master mas-ter of ceremonies. In the meeting it was announced that Corlett Simkins and Kther Perry of Cedar City had volunteered to fill ! the first contingent of 5 required to leave for the training camp on the 7th. i This relieved the Exemption Roard of j the unpleasant duty of muking a se-! lection from among the men. At 7:30 p. m. there wa-i a beautiful band concert from the steps of the public library, the street and sur- i rounding open space being crowded by i j auditors, on foot and in automobiles. The grand ball in the evening was, largely attended. The music was de- lightful and an excellent time was enjoyed en-joyed by all those present. |
