Five young men made their graduat- .ng bows to a large audience at Sacred Heart College last Thursday afternoon, ft It was the twenty-third annual com- 1 mencement. and though the class that i Ert?s out is small, three of the five will f continue to pursue studies along special J lines. The class consisted of Messrs. I William Coon, William Grimes John f Fallon MiVior.! l.-t 1 oiey. The last mentioned received first honors in his class. The programme was openwl jby a graceful introductory address. "The Class of IHOO," by William M. Coon of Buffalo, N. Y., who returns to his home !n a few days. "Private Property and i Single Tax," an ethical essay by Wil- I'-- liam J. Grimes, presented the "funda mental principles of the Henry George ; theory, with objections to them from the speaker's standpoint. "Electric Dis- I charge" was an illustrated lecture in electricity, given by Angelo M. Foley.! An astronomical essav on "Formation of the Universe" was by John T. Fal- Ion. The valedictorian was Michael C. i Kett, who sroke with a good deal of I oratorical fire and was enthusiastically I received. J Bishop X. C. Matz then conferred the I diplomas and the baccalaureate sermon, "The Beacon Lights of Education," I "as given by Hew Andrew B. Casey, ,, class of ul. Of the graduating class, Mr. Coon r returns home, Mr. Ke'cv will go into f business with his father in Denver, and Messrs. Fallon. Foley and Grimes en- ter the State School of Mines in the fall. " A very pleasant social was given by the ladies of St. Theresa's Auxiliary, Knights of St. John, in the MePhee Mock last Thursday evening. A piano solo by Mrs. Heath, vocal selections by I the Misses Edson and a song by Mr. Sturff were much cnjoed. Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Newman welcomed wel-comed a little son to their home, 2913 Arapahoe street, last Thursday. About '200 little children from St. Clara's Orphanage enjoyed Mrs. Elitch's hospitality last Thursday. The little ones were under the charge of the Sisters, and from a. m. to 5 p. m. the beautiful gardens Ave re open to them. Mrs. Elitch's annual treat is the only j outing the children get. Louise Emily Gegg Avas baptized at Logan Avenue Chapel last Sunday. Father Phillips is enjoying a short i i j i vacation in the mountains of Colorado. Colo-rado. - "The Holy City," a beautiful cantata by Gaul, was given very successfully at St. Leo's Sunday night. Father O'Ryan introduced it by a short talk on "The Relation of 'Music to Worship." saying that wherever there Avas worship wor-ship there had been music, and that the highest expressions of the soul had sprung naturally from the heart in i song. The Jews had chanted their psalms and the Christian nations had borroAved the practice from them. The soloists Avere Messrs. Peter Men-zies, Men-zies, Bradbury and Silver, and Miss : Estelle Hughes Bird and Miss Bessie i Dade. The motif of the cantata in the first part was the desire of the soul for God, and in the second part the vision of the city beautiful. A large attendance shoAved the appreciation ap-preciation of the people and enthusiasm : was inspiring to the musicians. ReA-. Father John O'Kane is visit- I ing his old friend and schoolmate, Rev. I Father Callanan. The Rev. gentlemen studied together for four years at the celebrated theological seminary of M.;y-nooth, M.;y-nooth, in Ireland.
