X (Correspondence Intermountain Catholic.) : Knowing that the consecration of the Rev. Dr. Henry Granjon as Bishop of the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona, would be of great interest to the readers of the Intermountain and Colorado-Catholic, not only , in the Territory of Arizona, Ari-zona, but throughout all the intermountain inter-mountain states. I send you a brief account of the grand ceremonies which occurred in the Baltimore Cathedral on last Sunday, his Eminence Cardinal Gibbons ofnciatinir. It was a magnificent spectacle and was attended by many of the most distinguished dis-tinguished churchmen of the country, in addition to a vast concourse of people. peo-ple. Bishop Granjon succeeds the Most Rev. P. Bourgade, first Bishop of Tucson, Tuc-son, who was last year elevated to the Archepiscopal See of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and at whose consecration the distinguished and eloquent Bishop of Denver, Dr. Matz, preached the sermon. ser-mon. To these two able and noble missionaries mission-aries the Church will look for great progress in the vast and scattered southwestern territory over which they preside. Bishop Granjon is especially fitted by training and education to grapple with this work. He has been for -the last three years in charge of the American branch of the Association for the Prop-! Prop-! agation of the Faith, with headquarters at St." Mary's Seminary, Baltimore.. He va.s born in Lyons, France, in 1863, and is of a distinguished family. He studied philosophy and theology In the Sulpician seminaries of Paris and Issy. afterwards going to Rome. He graduated there in divinity from the Apollinare university, and in canon law from the Minerva university, j In 1887 he was ordained a priest. At ' the ceremony of his ordination he met Archbishop Bourgade, then Vicar Apostolic Apos-tolic of Arizona, who was in Europe recruiting re-cruiting missionaries for Arizona. Bishop Bish-op Granjon volunteered to go as a' missionary mis-sionary to Arizona, where he labored from 1890 to 1S97. Three years ago he was summoned tttt -t-r-ft-f f to Baltimore and placed in charge of the Association Cor the Propagation of the Faith. Bishop Granjon possesses a good physique and a hearty, genial manner, which has not failed to make him very popular among the priests and students of St. Mary's Seminary. The Diocese of Tucson, over which he will preside, comprises Arizona Territory. Ter-ritory. Dona Ana, Grant and Eddy counties, as well as a part of Sierra county, in the territory of New Mexico. Mexi-co. It was established in 1897, and has sixteen churches with resident -priests and thirty-one missions with churches' only. There are twenty-five priests in the diocese, which has an estimated Catholic population of about 40,000. About 230 seminarians and three score priests, most of them from out of town, participated in the imposing procession. proces-sion. Following them came the prelates, pre-lates, in eluding Bishops Allen of Mobiles, Mo-biles, Monaghan of Wilmington, Mc-Faul Mc-Faul of Trenton, Archbishop Ryan of i Philadelphia and Cardinal Gibbons. ! Archbishop Boniface M. Krug of Monte Cassino, Italy, was also present. A ! number of prominent people occupied the pews nearest the sanctuary, in one of which sat the French ambassador. The Cardinal officiated, assisted by Bishops Allen and Monaghan. The sermon ser-mon was preached by Rev. Dr. Joseph V. Tracy, professor of scripture in Brighton seminary, Boston, Mass. In it he was short and to the point, dwelling dwell-ing upon the seriousness and surpassing interest of the ceremony of consecrating consecrat-ing a bishop. He also presented certain aspects of the episcopal office and concluded con-cluded by paying a high tribute to the honest humility and simple devotion of Bishop Granjon. The music for the occasion was rendered ren-dered by the Cathedral choir of fifty voices, under the direction of Mr. F. X. Hale, with orchestral accompaniment. Bishop Granjon has gone to Denver, 'Colo., and after spending a few days there will go to Santa Fe. He expects to reach Tucson. Ariz., by July 5, when he will take charge of his see. |
