Show DOES IT PAY FOR A GIRL TO BE PRETTY? (Chicago Sunday Tribune.) Po- it pay to be pretty? This is the fiuestion which the professional models I are asking each other. Which is bet tor, to be born with a beautiful face, or with a fine set of brains? If you i mild have one and not - Uvo other, which would you take, judging it com-,f com-,f lnorrial'.i"? Does it pay to be a beauty? If you Are thinking of becoming a professional profes-sional model you must settle this question ques-tion in your own mind before starting. First you must decide if you are ' tty enough to be a model. There are various tests for this, and unless you can pass them you might as well ive up. You "must be able to hold the expression." So few can hold exprep-ison. exprep-ison. They can smile, but they cannot hold the smile. It turns to a sickly min. They can frown, but when the picture is taken the frown looke like a grimace. Next, if you are going to bo a photographer's pho-tographer's model, have you the features fea-tures for a photograph? They must be 1 l'-ar ut and your profile must b t"ol. Unless your features are strong i and sharp : unless your eyes are large and full: unless your chin is oval and your forehead and eyebrows correct, y.-.u will not take a good ideture. H-re are the things that do not .cunt in the picture. Your complexion iocs not count. A yellow- skinned girl. :-i"tt"d si:l. a pale green skinned girl taks just as good a picture as a p. H. Iks and cream girl. The brightness bright-ness of your eyes is no aid. It often .happens that a girl will go into the ni"d.l bustiness because ?he has spark-. spark-. liner eyes. But the sparkle does not : show in the lense and her eyes are no pre' tier than those of any other' girl ulien the picture is finished. ".iils who blush, sparkle, lisp, and iutillate are no better models than J'l.y oth-r. Frequently there is a i'f.nny who "lights up well." She I 'hinks she can be a model. But Jier features, when the camera gets through with them, are not pleasing. V A uiii wandered into a photographic f-Mi'ii" to get a job as cashier. She had a straight now, large, full eyes, an r'V;i! face, and a little, smiling mouth. "We do not want a cashier." said the paotoara nhcr, "but we are in need of j -d models, and I should think you ; v.,.,. one." He took a picture of her :t was a brilliant success. A girl whose face is everywhere is Miss Lester, a New England girl with, a plentiful supply of dimples. She is an actress, but finds plentv of time to pose. Does it pay to be a professional mod-, mod-, cl . Ask Maude Thomas, and she will ; tf 11 you "Yes." She is of the bier, splen-. splen-. did type, fully S feet 10. broad of shoulder, shoul-der, and closely suggesting 175 pounds of weight. She take the most gorgeous picture of a stunning tpy. in handsome gowns, and. if she were so inclined, she could pose every minute of everv hour in fine clothes. She often gets ?10 for a. single pose. What kind of work pays the best is a question that is asked. Is there a wen paying branch of the business? The best payinp branch by all odds is the newspaper end. The fashion pages are full of high class, well paid models, and there are physical culture pictures for which the girls get all the way from $. to ?10 a pose. A splendid model is Viola Schenek. She is nearly six feet tall, slender as .1 willow, sweet of face, and full of expression. ex-pression. There are some who think her the prettiest girl in the world. Miss Schenek will not think of posing for less than $10. She has received as high as $15 for a cigar label. She has posed for dozens of labels, and has made a success of every picture. The regular price for a professional Photographic model is $5 a day, $3 for half a day. If sbe is a good model she need never be idle a day. But a great many of the models get a great deal more. Olive Jennings Cox. the J?urne-Jones J?urne-Jones girl, would not dream of posing for $5. but gets $10 for an afternoon. The hottest day last summer she posed for the advertisements of a fur house. She got $J5 and a cab both ways for herself and her mother, who never lets the fair Olive out of her sight. How much can a professional model mod-el earn? Ask Mona Desmond, the little ' "Miss Dresden China" of the studios. She is 5 feet nothine. weirhs about 100 pounds, but is so exquisitely proportioned propor-tioned that she looks tall in a picture. Miss Desmond will take $10 for a sitting but she prefers more. Does it pay to be pretty? Or is it better to be homely? That is still a question to be answered. Is a pretty girl who can earn from $5 to $10 a day better off than a homely girl who doesn't know what she can earn? WTiich will come out the richer girl? Study it out for yourself. |
