Show A "KIND WORD" SOCIETY. There was organized in New York some time ago a "Kind Word Society," its chief object being the giving of assistance and finding employment for working girls who had lost their positions. Several thousand girls were assisted by the organization, or-ganization, which is still carrying on its good work, and is si society of kind deeds as well as of kind words. Why not have societies organized for the express ex-press purpose of saying kind words, not only to those in distress, but to everybody? Why not have societies the members of which shall pledge themselves them-selves to always speak kindly? Consider if you will how much sweetness and harmony it would bring into the world if none but kind words were ever spoken. Thousands of unkind deeds are the direct di-rect result of unkind words. If we would always speak kindly, many of our evil deeds would cease. And if only we would always think kindly of others! It does not follow that one thinks kindly because he speaks kindly. Many people are sweet and gracious in their manner and words simply because be-cause the common rules of politeness compel them to be polite and courteous. There is no real kindness kind-ness in their hearts toward those to whom they are speaking. Indeed, it often happens that a regard for the usages of polite society induces many to be exceedingly kind and gracious toward those whom they dislike exceedingly and about whom they say the unkindest things in private. This sort of deceit de-ceit and wickedness is common far too common. The kind and gentle word that comes from the heart what a mighty rower for good it is! How it sweetens the world. Why not organize a kind word society in your town or city? And add the doing of kind deeds to the society's duties. There is not better or more certain way of doing good and of being good than by cultivating a spirit of kindness kind-ness and a desire to be helpful to others. God will help you to develop this beautiful spirit if you lack J it now. -t- |
