Show BUTTE, MONT. j After a three days' retreat, conducted conduct-ed by Rev. F. X. Batens. about sixty children of St. Lawrence's church last Sunday made their first holy communion. commu-nion. This solemn event was the occasion oc-casion of many expressions of gratification gratifi-cation 011 the part of the parishioners parishion-ers whose children had been so carefully' care-fully' instructed in their sacred duties in the church, and from every point of view the affair was genuinely successful. success-ful. A very appropriate and impressive impres-sive sermon was preached by Father Batens, which moved a large part of his congregation to tears. He spoke touchingly of the simpiHcity and love-ableness love-ableness of little children, and exhorted ex-horted his audience to emulate the example ex-ample of first communicants in their daily life. The exercises were ('(inducted ('(in-ducted in a most edifying manner. The 1 altars were lieantlfnllv decoraiprl with flowers. On the main altar of the church there appeared a mass of green, in which was mingled a beautiful combination com-bination of red and white carnations interwoven with smilax. Special music was rendered by the children's choir at both the 8 and 11 o'clock masses. St. Joseph's Literary society was organized or-ganized last Tuesday, with a large and enthusiastic membership. J. J. O'Connor O'Con-nor was elected president; H. Pis50.lt, vice president; Martin A. Egan, secretary, secre-tary, and A. B. Kimball, treasurer. The club's purpose is to promote the social and literary welfare of the members. Club rooms have been established es-tablished in the basement of St. Joseph's Jo-seph's school, Delaware and FiTst streets, and are being fitted up in firsi-I firsi-I class manner. Thirty-seven charter members were enrolled Tuesday night. The enrollment of members will be continued for two weeks, so that all who desire may have an opportunity! to become affiliated with the society .3s charter members. The club is the result re-sult of Rev. Father Leitham's weekly smokers which he instituted recently for the entertainment of many members mem-bers of his parish. In accordance with a general order issued by Supreme Knight Edward F. Hearn of the Knights of Columbus, Butte council No., 668 of that organization organi-zation last Saturday night celebrated the anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. Prior to this year the occasion was observed ob-served by branches of tho order at their own discretion, but the mandate from the head of the organization has established the anniversary as an annual an-nual observance for all the. lodges of the Knights of Columbus in the United Unit-ed Statese and Canada and wherever else any exist. The occasion has been made a state holiday in Colorado. JVIany members of the local branch and a considerable number of visiting members mem-bers attended last night's celebration, which was held in Elks-' hall, East Quartz street. Murphy x of Missoula. -Other prominent members also spoke later in! the evening. Recitations were given) by W. J. O'Connor, Messrs. Hartz of Billings, McCaffery of St. Louis and Joseph Peters of Anaconda. Among those who sang were M. J. Sheehan and Charles P. Nevin. Piano selections were played by Professor Amiraux and E. J. Cafhion. The H. IS. C. was entertained at the home of Miss Julia Driscoll .Monday evening. The evening was spent in games and music, many vocal selections selec-tions being rendered by the members of the club. The club has just reorganized, re-organized, after a long vacation. Misses Agnes Tobin, Francess Driscoll and Margaret Weig-enstein Weig-enstein were visitors. The club adjourned ad-journed to meet Monday eveninar at the home of Miss Aileen Cahill, lu7 South Idaho. The wedding of G. U. MacDonald of this city and Miss Sad.; M. Lynch was solemnized at St. Paul on Monday, On. 7, with Archbishop Ireland officiating. Tho groom is connected with a weil-known weil-known shoe firm of this city, while the bride was one of the. popular teachers in the public schools here. A reception recep-tion was held at the home of the bride's parents in North Aldrich avenue. ave-nue. Shortly after the reception Mr. and Mrs. MacDonald left for the east, and will visit the Jamestown exposition, exposi-tion, Boston, New York and Chicago, returning to Butte the first of November.
