Show THIRTY STRIKERS THROW' THOUSANDS OUT OF WORK Butte, April 2. Three thousand min-: min-: ers employed in Anaconda, Parrot and Washoe properties, are walking the streets today, as a result of the walkins out of the stationary engineers at the mines of the above companies. The strikers number but thirty men. yet not a cage has been lowered in any of the properties mentioned men-tioned today. The engineers' union does not endorse the action of the strik. . ing engineers. I The Anaconda and Washoe concen-l concen-l trators at Anaconda were closed down i at 11 o'clock tonight, throwing about ; 1.500 men out of employment. This action was made necessary by the strike of the hoisting engineers. The smelters nave a limited supply oi ore, , I enough, it is thought, to last two or ' three days, when they, too, will be forced to suspend, throwing an addi- j tional 2.000 men out of work. The hoisting engineers who last night went on a strike and tied up the prop- : ei ties of the Amalgamated Copper ! Mining company have held a meeting . and organized a union independent of j the regular engineers' union, and have ! announced their determination to fight their cause to a finish. The Amalgamated officials have issued is-sued a statement, in which the hoisting hoist-ing engineers are charged with breaking break-ing faith with the company. It is maintained that an agreement was made whereby the present wage scale was to remain unchanged. The strikers, strik-ers, on the other hand, claim they-op- nnspfl the action t the time and arp in no sense bound by the decision of the union. A rumor on the streets tonight is to the effect that F. Augustus Heinze, who has long opposed the Amalgamated Amalga-mated interests, is behind the strike. It is claimed that Charles McAuliff, an engineer at the Anaconda mine, told John O'Neill, superintendent of the mine, no later than this morning that Heinze was back of the movement, and would pay each of the engineers 55 per day for keeping the mines of the Amalgamated company closed. It is also alleged that the statement was made in a boasting way. |
