The Easter services at St. Mary's ca- , t.hedral were most impressive and the I inusic very elaborate, the crowning I feature belcg the solemn pontifical high Si i ' - ,.. --N. 4 . . " . mass celebrated at 11 o'clock by Rt. Rev. Bishop Scanlan, assisted by Rev. Father Keenan as deacon, Rev. Father Morrissey, sub-deacon, and Rev. Father Fa-ther Kiely as master of ceremonies. The Easter sermon, which was grandly grand-ly eloquent, was preached by Rev. Father Fa-ther Morrissey. The music was of a very high order. Many competent judges pronounced it the best ever heard in the cathedral. Master Roy Williams. St. Mary's talented young violinist, assisted the choir, and played with his usual brilliancy. bril-liancy. There is seldom heard in any i church in the city better soprano support sup-port than is heard at the cathedral. The soprano soloist of the cathedral is Miss Lottie Owen, whose beautiful I voice was heard to the best advantage in tha "Et Inoarnatus Est" and the "Domine Fili." The first named solo was exquisite. Mrs. O. T. Carlson is one of St. Mary's favorite solo singers. She has a loveiy voice, very clear and sweet. Mrs. Cloy Elmer is a new soprano at St. Mary's this year. She has a beautiful beau-tiful voice and sang the "Venl Creator," Crea-tor," by La Hache, with unusual finish and expression. Miss Rossi and Miss McAllister have carefully trained voices that were heard to good advantage in several ! solos. Miss Harley did excellent work as second soprano. She has been singing at St. Mary's for many years, and is a great favorite with the congregation. Mr. WhUeman's beautiful tenor voice was heard in several solos and quartettes. quar-tettes. Mr. Scarpa, the regular tenor of the choir, was in excellent voice. T. v.. ..raiura was oass soioisi ana aia excellent work. The music as a whole was very creditable cred-itable and the children deserve much credit for the interest they take in the choir. The choir at St. Mary's is always al-ways assisted by non-Catholics, who generously devote their time to learning learn-ing the music. This fact was particularly particu-larly noticeable this vear. and the ser vices of those ladies and gentlemen are deeply appreciated. They merit the appreciation which is given them by the St. Mary's congregation. |
