Show j Denied Religious Liberty. The United States training ship Monongahela carries some 240 boyd, many of whom - are Catholics. The chaplain on board is a Baptist minister. minis-ter. The boys are all compelled to attend at-tend the Protestant worship that he conducts, to listen to his sermons, and to receive religious instructions from him. As this goes on in their case for six years before they are taken off that vesssl. the result may be easily guessed their faith is gone, and they are Protestants Prot-estants or nothing. When that vessel, under its present commander, touches at ports and stays for weeks at a time, the Catholic boys are not sent to mass on Sundays nor is a Catholic priest invited on board to attend to their religious needs. xet tne regulations oi ine unuea States navy order (see article 259. paragraph para-graph 2). that "the religious tendencies of officers and men shall be recognized and encouraged," and the chaplain (in article 762, paragraph 3), is told that as one of his duties "he shall facilitate, facili-tate, so far as possible, the performance perform-ance of divine service by clergymen of churches other than his own who may be permitted by the captain to visit the ship for that purpose. |
