Show Mr. Taft's Religion. From the Monitor, Xewark. Why all this hubbub about Mr. Taft's religitm? The constitution guarantees to every citizen freedom of religious worship. Why, then, this seeming anxiety anx-iety to announce Taft's religion? Who made the inquiry that necessitated the explanation concerning his religion? It is a rather mysterious proceeding altogether. alto-gether. We all know that there is only one religion that debars from the presidency. pres-idency. That religion is the Catholic religion. The constitution is a piece cf hypocrisy so far as Catholics are concerned when it comes to the presidency. presi-dency. It is not written in the constitution, constitu-tion, but it is written in the will of aspire the the presidency. There are few that doubt that if Roosevelt were the candidate of the Republican party, he would be overwhelmingly elected. But if Roosevelt were to become a Catholic tomorrow, the road to the presidency would be thereby blocked to him. It is a pity that this is all true in this great American republic. But true it is. We Americans proclaim from the housetops our principles of absolute religious re-ligious freedom, and then go home to sharpen our political knife against a Catholic neighbor. Of course, this religious re-ligious prejudice is disappearing. But it still holds sway enough over American Amer-ican votes to make a Catholic nominee for the presidency a political impossibility. impossi-bility. And how do the Catholics act? They vote with pleasure and satisfaction for liberal-minded non-Catholics for every office. It never enters their mind to inquire what a man's religion is when it is a question of voting for or against him. Taft may bea Unitarian, but that fact will not keep a Catholic from voting vot-ing for him. The dominant Protestant-ianism Protestant-ianism of our day is unconfessed Uni-tarianism. Uni-tarianism. Protestantism is logically the rejection of Christ as God. It does not startle us one iota to hear that Mr. Taft is a Unitarian. Possibly he is like a friend of ours, of whom a witty Irishman informed us that "he was a Catholic, but did not work hard at it." 3fc 3fc 5 But who Inquired, anyway, about Mr. Taft's religion? Was it not sufficient to have the smile that never comes off? Was there a suspicion that liberal-minded, big-hearted Taft was over-fair over-fair to the Catholics? |
