Show AN IRISH AUSTRALIAN ARCHBISHOP. Archbishop Dunne of Brisbane, Australia, who recently celebrated his twenty-fifth anniversary of his episcopate, was born at Lismore, County Water-ford, Water-ford, in 1830. His early education was received principally in Lismore Grammar school. After completing his secondary course, he entered the Irish college, Rome, and distinguished himself by a brilliant collegiate course. He was ordained priest in 1855. Returning to Ireland, he was cliosen one of the masters of St. Laurence O'Toole's seminary, sem-inary, Dublin, of which the first bishop of Brisbane, Bris-bane, the late Dr. O'Quinn, was then president. Among those who studied under his tuition were the present archbishoD of Dublin, Dr. Walsh, and General Sir William Butler. Father Dunne subsequently joined his chief. Dr. O'Quinn, who had been appointed Bishop of Brisbane, and ably filled the duties of diocesan secretary, while energetically performing the arduous ardu-ous duties of the priesthood in Brisbane, as at that time there were few. priests. His 'abilities were recognized and conspicuously shown when he was appointed secretary of the first Plenary Council of Australia. He was transferred to the charge of Townsville, and in 18S2 consequent upon the death of Feather O'Quinn, was appointed Bishop of Brisbane, Bris-bane, and on June IS he was sonsecrated in St. Stephen's cathedral. Fifteen years later Dr. Dnnne was raised to the dignity of archbishop bv papal brief on May 10, 1887. |
