Show REALLY DEPLORABLE. More Unscrupulously Mean Actions of the "Safety" Bosses. We were honestly in hopes, as stated in last issue, that we shouhl have no further occasion to refer to the unscrupulous actions of the heads or wire-pullers of the so-called so-called "safety" society. But it seems that their actions are growing meaner and more contemptible con-temptible every day. To ignore such'lhigra nt actsof pure cussedness (we know of no other word that will so nicely cover them and their performances) would be fir,ii,l in eilonfW ieriti i t.l.i ntr SOUie .. t, 0 soulless neighbor to rob your hen roost week after week without complaint. com-plaint. Not satisfied with their $1,000 pet law suit and the literal compliance, com-pliance, of our City Council, with the order of the court, the leaders carry the thing still further by temporarily concealing their cloven hoofs, and now turn dog in the manger. Thinking to beat the city, they hired men to sneak stealthily into the mountains to secure to themselves title to the stream of water proposed for the use of the city water system. Was that done for the general good of the people, or for selfish or contentious motives? But they were cleverly out-witted by the Council, who fortunately secured the waters only two days before. The disheartened ''boys" skulked back and this is t how their Vice-President reports their procedure: "Today the citizens sent a number num-ber of men up the south fork of our canyon to see if there were any chances of materially increasing the stream coming from that direction." Attractive coloring that; it has the "safety" society oil all over it. That act had this good effect, however: it was the direct means of losing them many of their best, soundest and most influential sympathizers, who turned immediately immedi-ately around and will hence forth aid and support the City Council. Foiled in this unmanly step, these "safety" lxsses directly laid bare the bad motives, which have actuated them in every move, by another meaner and even smaller act than the one mentioned above. These men cry long and painfully, "increase our water." but when an attempt is made, they strive to frustrate it. Whatconsistency! i The Council had made partial I arrangements with a gentleman in Mantua to secure a fine stream of excellent water to turn into Box , Elder Creek, to help swell its ! volume. Now these "safety" leaders, or their co-laborers, actually belittled themselves by going to this gentleman gentle-man and doing all in their power to embitter his mind against the City Council, and attempted to make the breach so wide that it would be impossible for the Council Coun-cil to purchase this goodly stream. Their stories of the Council's intention of swindling him so frightened the gentleman that he had protecting friends on the grounds when the members of the Council called to consummate the sale of the water. It took hours to disabuse the mind of the misled gentleman, but it was finally effectually done. This piece of small meddling will cost the city something, and we may now never be able to secure the entire stream, which at first was probable. Rule or ruin seem to be their guiding tactics. As we have asserted timo and time again, anything to stir up strife, division and contention, that they may plunge into the exciting ex-citing swim, seems to be one of their moving motives. Simply on account of this society and the abominable methods meth-ods of its leaders, we may look for an ignominious "bust up" of the canning factory project. This state of things is really deplorable, hut it exists nevertheless. The feeling feel-ing has become so bitter that the two sides can't or won't alliliate, even for the advancement of the interests of the town. But, we are more than pleased to state, their hasty, unwise and too often premeditated selfish actions are fast doing the good work. One by one, the best men of their party, or those who were inclined to lean that way, are dropping drop-ping oil', to swell the ranks of the other side. They have injured themselves with incurable self-in-(lieted wounds and are fast expiring expir-ing from natural causes. The eyes of the people are being opened and the the "safety" society and its leaders are sinking into the ignoble depths of oblivion. |
