St-y;-A5f . 1 L J :i - l Brady Barney of Panguitch has won several competitions in the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot tournaments that have been held the last couple of months. He has advanced his way to the state level and will compete for nationals on Feb. 4. Barney Advances To State In Hoop Shoot PANGUITCH - Brady Barney of Panguitch was a big winner in the Elks Lodge Hoop Shoot this year and will go on to compete at state level finals in February. Each year the Elks Lodge sponsors a Hoop Shoot, which is a Free Throw competition where ' over 12,000 young boys and girls ages 8-13 compete to find the best Free Throw shooter in the state. The winner will then go on to national competition. The shooters are put into boy and girl groups by age (8-9, 10-11, 10-11, 12-13). Each school sends one boy and girl winner to area competition. The area Elks lodge assigned to the Garfield County Schools is the Cedar City Lodge. Brady Barney of Panguitch captured first place in the 12-13 year old boys age group at the Panguitch School and went on to the area competition in Cedar City on Dec. 1, 2001. Barney then won the Free Throw competition com-petition in Cedar City, shooting 1 7 out of 25 free throws. From there, Brady went on to compete against four other area site winners, win-ners, which were from the St. George, Moab, Price and Richfield Lodge winners. These five areas winners met on Saturday Jan. 5, in Monroe, to find the Southern Region winner. Barney shot in the first round and made 8 out of 10 free throws, then came back to run off 15 out of 15 in the second round to win the Southern region with a score of 23 out of 25 free throws. The field of 12-13 year old boys has now been narrowed to three in the state of Utah. Barney will represent the southern south-ern part of the state against one central and one northern winner. They will compete on Feb. 16, in Orem and the winner will go on to participate in the National competition to be held in Las Vegas, Nev. Brady is a son of Curtis and Cindy Barney of Panguitch. |
