Show Passersby as the comer of Center and Mam in Panguitch marveled that anyone could have survived this accident, but 19-year-old Robert PANGUITCH In one of the worst accidents in recent memory, mem-ory, the life of a 19-year old Clearfield man was miraculously spared when he climbed out of his ' totally demolished compact car after it smashed into another parked vehicle just north of Panguitch Pan-guitch Saturday morning Robert Gibson, 19, was traveling travel-ing south on U.S. 89 when about one-half mile out of Panguitch his compact car struck an abandoned truck and trailer loaded with pigeon pi-geon cages. The large vehicle and its load had pulled to the side of the highway earlier that morning morn-ing with mechanical trouble. Gibson said he approached the rear of the parked vehicle at about 40 mph, but assumed the vehicle was just moving slowly. By the time he realized it was not moving, he was upon it. He tried to swerve to miss but time simply ran out and his 1986 Honda Civic Gibson, Clearfield, crawled out virtually unscathed after his 1986 Honda struck a parked truck one-half mile north of Panguitch on U.S. 89. While it appeared no one could have survived the crash, within two minutes, Gibson, who had been seatbelted in, was able to wrench himself from the now even smaller compact car and within minutes was enroute to Garfield Memorial Hospital by ambulance. A passerby had called 911 on a cellular phone to summon assistance. Gibson suffered only an abrasion abra-sion above his right eye, a laceration lacera-tion above his right ear, scrapes and abrasions to the right lower calf of his leg and an injured right knee cap as well as substantial Druising from the seatbeli straps. The accident was investigated by UHP Trooper Roger Bailey, who cited Gibson with failure to control his vehicle. Gibson has claimed the truck and tractor were intruding onto the highway lane with no red lights or flag to mark it... The driver of the damaged pigeon truck asserts differently. His rig was taken to a local autobody-repair autobody-repair shop in Panguitch. Gibson's Honda was towed to Thomas Auto at Center and Main in Panguitch where for hours spectators marveled that anyone could have survived the wreck, especially without any major injuries. inju-ries. Within a couple hours of the accident Gibson was about town laundering his blood-stained clothing. His parents and his wife Kimberly were headed to Panguitch Pan-guitch to retrieve their lucky son and husband. Gibson and his wife are parents of two-week old Alexander Alex-ander and 3-year old Jessica. |
