Show Farm Bureau's New Book Helps Teach About Agin Schools In an effort to stimulate knowledge know-ledge about and interest in agriculture agricul-ture in Utah, the Utah Farm Bureau has developed and published a book about agriculture in the state for use in Utah's schools. "Utah Agriculture and Me," subtitled "Ag in the Classroom" is being made available to all Utah teachers, K-6, and in all vocational agriculture classes in the state, with the first books for Garfield County distributed this week by Garfield County Farm Bureau president Lowell V. Henrie Jr. The comprehensive collection of materials relating to Utah's agriculture agricul-ture contains a fascinating variety of activities and in-depth information in-formation for students, correlated by educational professionals to each grade level's curriculum, making them practical and easy to utilize in the classroom for the teachers. The materials were compiled under the direction of Dr. Donald R. Daugs, Department of Elementary Education, Utah Slate University, and Anna Jensen, former In- formation Officer, Utah Department of Agriculture. A variety of agricultural organizations organi-zations and private companies throughout the state, through generous gen-erous donations, made possible the publication, several years in the making. Many teachers provided ideas for activities found in the book and other field-tested materials before publication. Members of the "Utah Ag in the Classroom Committee," a group of dedicated individuals from many separate agricultural organizations or-ganizations professional societies, universities and government agencies agen-cies contributed their knowledge and skills to its production. The suggestions for learning experiences ex-periences contained in the book are organized around topics relevant to both agriculture and the Utah Core Curriculum, a set of state-mandated standards and objectives for education. Henrie hopes to place books with elementary teachers in each school in the county and in school libraries within the next two weeks. |
