Show 1 - - " 1 Columnist Reflects On Royals' Win, BYU's Big Loss By John Yardley The Kansas City Royals came back from oblivion to win the World Series in seven games with a little help from' a Utahn and a friend of Panguitch Lake. BYU, meanwhile, broke a lot of hearts and took a plunge in the national polls as they fell to lowly UTEP in WAC play. The Royals came back after being down 3-1 to St. Louis. Saturday night, trailing 1-0 with one out in the ninth, Dane Iorg gave KC the win with a bases loaded pinch single to right, driving in two runs. Iorg was a BYU player who still is a resident of Provo in the off season. Coinciden-tally, he played in 1982 with the Cardinals and hit around .400 in that series which the Cards won. Dan Qulsenberry, whose grandfather-ln-law has spent time each summer at Panguitch Lake with Clem Church, and the late Bill Bruhn, had come Into the Saturday night game to hold the Royals close in the final Inning. Quiz is the top reliever in the American League. A real fine idividual with extraordinary skill as a relief pitcher, .the Quiz would be welcome to visit Panguitch Lake himself some year, at least to ice-fish in the off season. Back to the series, after the heroics of Saturday, the Royals came back to blow out the Cards 11-0 on Sunday. Twenty-one year-old Bret Saberhagen was the winning pitcher and the Series MVP. Kansas City made history with their two comebacks from 3-1 in the playoffs and the series. As was mentioned here last week, George Brett Is such a super pressure hitter, he went 4 for 5 in the final game. BYU and Utah both took it on the chin as Air Force moves to the top alone of the WAC race. Utah was only given a chance to beat AF, but BYU was a five touchdown favorite to beat 0-6 UTEP. It hurts to write it and you hate to see it, but the Cougars lost a lot of pride, publicity, and money (Cotton Bowl package about $2 million) in this loss. Enough said. Girls volleyball again takes center stage this week as the girls play State here in Panguitch this week. Valley was the first in Region last week over North Sevier, followed by Piute, Gunnison, Parowan and Panguitch. Congratulations to the Panguitch girls for the first trip to State in the past few years. Five teams from Region 11 and five from Region 13 will join our teams in play on Friday and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday. There should be some great action.. .go check it out. Number 4 Pam llepworth rises to the occasion and is getting ready to slam another point home as the Panguitch High School girls volleyball team won its first game in the Region 12 tournament Saturday, |
