Show Commission Discusses Sawmill Industry One of the most important industries in Garfield County came under discussion at a recent county commission meeting. Officials from federal, local governments and various business groups came to the commission meeting to voice opinions concerning the future of the sawmill industry in the county. Among those attending the meeting were Jim Matson, Jim Koons and Jim Taylor from Kaibab Industries. From the Forest Service were John Lupis, Doug Austin, Calvin Bird, Gilbert Becenti, David Dallison, A. Clair Baldwin, John C. Bentley, Vern H. Roundy and Rollo H. Brunson. Also attending were Sheldon Steed and George Fry from Escalante Sawmills, Mayor Jon Lee Torgerson of Pangultch, Jim Riley of Intermountain Forest Services and Vaughn McDonald of the Five County Association of Governments. While at the meeting concerning the future of the area as far as the sawmill industry was concerned, John Luipsi of the Forest Service showed those present the projected land area that would be traded if the BLM USFS land exchange becomes law. Mr. and Mrs. Berne Jackson were awarded the Bryce Canyon Airport contract. Burns Black, Antimony was issued a building permit to construct a lodge as long as he complies with the county building ordinances. Virgil Anderson was hired on a contract basis for weed spraying. The creek bank on Earl Roe's pasture property will be repaired by the county. The county will advertise for bids to black top the area between the court house and Zion's First National Bank in Panguitch. The county will renew the notary bonds, at $30 each for Patrick Nolan, county attorney and Judy Henrie. Trudie Owens will be bonded upon her return to work. bryce Ice and Bryce Valley Irrigation and Appliance Repair were issued a business license. Judy Henrie's salary was increased by $150 a month retroactive to April 1. |
