Show Farm Leaders Responsible Action by Congress on Budget The Board of Directors for the state's largest farming organization, meeting in Salt Lake City, has hailed the action of the U.S. Senate, which has passed major budgetary reform, and has called on the U.S. House of Representatives to approve similar legislation. Speaking for the Utah Farm Bureau Federation board, UFBF President Frank O. Nishiguchi said Senate approval of SCR 32, the First Concurrent Budget Resolution, is a giant step towards restoring fiscal responsiblity to our national government. This resolution has been endorsed by the White House, and would cut spending by up to $300 billion over the next three years. "Our whole economy depends on more sensible budgeting and spending," Nishiguchi said. "The savings that would result of this measure is eventually approved by the House would be of great benefit to the general economy, as well as farmers and ranchers," he added. The long-time farm leader said to sit back and wait for congressional approval of the budget resolution is not enough, however. He announced that Farm Bureau will urge its membership, as well as all other citizens, to write their congressman and call for passage of the concurrent resolution, and cease the practice of borrowing to cover deficit spending. "We farmers know all too well that our government cannot borrow itself into prosperity," Nishiguchi said. "Some farmers have tried this, but were caught by declining commodity prices and land values." "By the same token, we cannot allow our own government to suffer similar disarray, nor can we allow those who have caused this problem to try and rectify it by raising our taxes," Nishiguchi stated. "It's very important that this serious problem be corrected now, not only to protect our general economy, but to Insure that future generations are not burdened with the monumental debts of their forebearers," he concluded. |
