Show Little League Sets Signup; Need Local Financial Support John Yardley The local Little League baseball and Softball registrations are well underway in the area. Play will begin by the first of May, weather permitting. The leagues In Escalante, Bryce Valley and Panguitch are dedicated to participation for kids with an emphasis to teaching fundamentals. Girls and boys alike are the beneficiaries. Many, many' adult men and women give their time and effort in building the leagues and the players. Recently, the Little Leagues have had some trouble financially. Most of this trouble can be solved simply by parents making sure they pay the appropriate fees for their child to participate. Last year in Panguitch, some of the officers had to sign a note personally to secure the necessary funds to operate the league. Of course, this is not right. If every parent would see to it that they return all league equipment and pay the registration fees, it would lift a load off the organization. The adult coaches and leaders could then concentrate on what they do best teaching the basics of teamwork, sportsmanship and physical excellence. Meanwhile in the world of sports, the jazz have qualified for the playoffs which begin next Tuesday in Salt Lake City. The Jazz probable first round opponent will be with Phoenix or Denver. You dedicated basketball fans can see plenty of NBA basketball over the next month. A drive to Salt Lake could make you a "first person" spectator. In the NCAA finals, Georgetown and Houston played the final game with Georgetown winning 84-57. The showdown between Akeem and . Ewing never developed. The Hoyas actually won rather easily much to my dismay! In the preliminary games at Seattle, Kentucky shot only 3 of 33 in the second half against Georgetown after leading 27-22 at half-time. The Hoyas .defeated Kentucky 30-43 in a poor shooting half as you will ever see by a major college team, let alone a final four team. Upstart Virginia took Houston to overtime before finally falling 49-47. BYU's Steve Young made his professional football debut Sunday as the L.A. Express fell to New Jersey 26-10. Young hit his first couple of passes and ended up 19 of 29 for 162 yards, one touchdown and one interception. In watching a replay of the game, I thought Young played admirably. His passes were on the money and he seemed cool under the immense pressure. He has felt the pressure of the $40 million contract. I read recently where Young asked his father for a loan of a couple hundred bucks. In his first 21 days in Los Angeles, Young ate at Burger King 18 of those days. He's afraid to spend the money because as he says, "Heck, I haven't earned any of it yet." After watching his first performance, I predict he and the young Express team will be heard from, and in the not too distant future. I was impressed. Bryan Griffin of Escalante won second place in the 800 meters last Saturday at a large track gathering in Ogden sponsored by Weber State. Bryan, as was mentioned here in an earlier article, is a thinclad representing Utah State. All the major intermountain universities were involved in this meet. Finally, the Major League Baseball season beings this week. In fact, the first game played was last Monday. Those with cable can catch the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs four to five times a week. Those with satellite dishes around the county could probably have a steady diet of baseball, including several games every night from now unitl October. |
