Nearly 600 people attending the two-day convention watched Intermountain Health Care, Inc. president Dave Jepson present the award to Yardley. The award, created last year and Trustee of the Year awarded at annual Utah Hospital Association's convention, presented for the first time to Joseph Rosenblatt, trustee at the University of Utah Hospital, is co-sponsored by the American College of Hospital Administrators and the Utah Hospital Association. It is awarded to hospital trustees who have made "significant contributions to the Utah health care industry," said Jepson in making his presentation to Yardley. The award acknowledges the hospital trustee based upon tenured service, individual contributions to the trustee's hospital, leadership in the community and the creative vision offered in planning and creating the hospital's future. In his presentation to Yardley, Jepson acknowledged some of the honored trustee's achievements, noting that he currently serves in the Utah State Legislature as representative from District 73, the largest geographical area in the state. He pointed out Yardley's significant role in rural health care as he described Yardley's contribution to the planning, fund-raising and construction of Garfield Memorial Hospital. Yardley was chairman of the Garfield County commission in 1974 when the plan for the new Garfield Memorial was first developed. He was personally responsible for securing additional funding needed to complete the project. The 20-room hospital and adjoining clinic was finished in 1975 and staffed by three young physicians recruited through the National Health Corps. Yardley has served on the Garfield Memorial Hospital Board for 12 years and was chairman of that board in 1978. He still serves as a board member of the facility which serves Garfield, Piute and parts of Kane counties in southern Utah. Yardley owns and operates Yardley Insurance Company, which has continued to grow since he entered the insurance business 33 years ago. He developed his business and his 135-acre alfalfa farm with the help of his wife, Alta, who serves as his secretary, farm truck driver, and all-around consultant, said Jepson of Yardley, Yardley's 'determination to succeed has spanned a lifetime, from his survival in a one-man plane crash as a pilot in the Navy to taming the challenging world of politics said Jepson as he presented the plaque to the beaming Yardley, |
