Marshall seized the opportunity to actively participate in numerous workshops. One workshop in particular was entitled "Tapping the Tourism Press" which was a panel discussion on taking advantage of market research, understanding your product and taking advantage of publicity opportunities. This.three hour workshop utilized the talents of several public relations and news persons. The workshop placed a good deal of emphasis on how not to be intimidated by the press and how to be ready and flexible to overcome negative publicity. It was explained to the group that public relations is "doing good and getting credit for it." That business should know their product and be prepared to market it ... to be factual, current and credible. That it is extremely important to know and respect newspaper deadlines. Marshall was able to take part in a mini-docudrama which was videotapped and played back to the group to see how a businessman should react under the stress of an on-the-spot news team combined with negative press releases. |
