Show BLM Warns of Dangers In Tubing Activities Tubing can be an exciting winter activity for both children and adults, but precautions must be taken to assure that it doesn't become a dangerous or even fatal snort. According to Rod Lister, Sevier River Resource Area manager for the Bureau of Land Management, increased use of the popular Sand Ledges tubing area, along with lacq of compliance with the posted rules, is creating safety problems. Several accidents have been reported this year. Lister said that the Sand Ledges site was developed in 1971 to eliminate safety hazards associated with undeveloped area. However, with heavy snowfall, the concentrated use at Sand Ledges can result in accidents if recreationists do not use common sense and follow the rules. This winter as many as 1009 people have been observed at the tubing area at one time. Although prohibited, snowmobilers often open the gate to the area and use the tubing hill, contributing to the safety problem. Lister encouraged the public to ay attention to the posted signs at the tubing area. He requested that parents pay close attention to their children's activities and not encourage them to try stunts which create an unnecessary risk. Lister said B1M would welcome public comments and ideas of improving the safety of the Sand Ledges area. He noted that remembering the following rules will make for a fun and safe tubing experience; Only one rider per tube, Make sure th tubing hill is clear before proceeding, Avoid multiple tube rides, Have fun but be careful; don't take unnecessary chances. |
