Show Open House Tuesday Garfield County Opens Centennial Celebration Garfield County will kick-off its centennial year with an open house at the county courthouse in Panguitch on Tuesday, March 9, the 100th anniversary day of the founding of the county. The special day-long celebration is being planned by members of Daughters of the Utah Pioneers throughout the county. Each town will submit historical items associated with its history for display at the courthouse during the open house. Photographs of many of the early officials of the county and of its several communities will also be on display. The DUP ladies will be costumed in dresses of that early pioneer period and the Panguitch Rhythm Band will perform. The Escalante Elementary and high school bands will perform at 11 a.m. in front of the courthouse. Mayors and other public officials will be on hand for the festivities and refreshments will be served throughout the day. Garfield County Commissioners adopted a resolution making the celebration offical by declaring, "BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNTY COMMISSION OF GARFIELD COUNTY, STATE OF UTAH, AS FOLLOWS: (That) March 9, 1982 is hereby designated as the first day of a year-long observance of the centennial of Garfield County. (1) On that day, a reception and open house will be held at the Garfield County Courthouse in Panguitch, Utah, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (2) The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers will participate in collecting and displaying County memorabilia, and in planning various other observances and events in connection with the Centennial. (3) It is suggested and recommended that special events and celebrations to be held in this County during this Centennial Year, from March 9, 1982, to March 9, 1983 should reflect and take into account the Centennial of Garfield County, and make appropriate observance of this significant milestone in the course of such activities. The resolution was passed and approved Feb. 22 and signed by commission chairman George Middleton.
