Show Donny Leach Chosen Tournament MVP Donny Leach, left, and Dale Orton were named to top spots following Region 12 sophomore basketball tournament. Leach was named most valuable player and Orton was listed to the top ten list. Donny Leach, 16, Panguitch' Bobcat, was voted Most Valuable Player at Saturday night's final session of the Region 12 Sophomore Basketball Tournament. Coaches of the eight participating teams in the tournament had just yoted for the Top Ten All-Star players. Among the ten named was young Leach's teammate, Dale Orton, also 16, and some spectators were won dering why the popular Leach's name had not been among those named, especially since he had been included the previous year as a freshman among the All-Star players. Then, in an unusual move, and with praise for young Leach's basketball skills, but acknowledging even more ,his sportsmanlike conduct, self-control under pressure, his self-discipline, and his outstanding attitude, Ralph Riggs, a native of jlatch and coach at hosting Parowan high school, announced that Leach had been chosen Most Valuable Player, the First time such an award had ever been made at the sophomore tournament. Spectators rose in a standing ovation for the young player. He is the son of Mr. and'Mrs. Glenn Leach, Panguitch, and Orton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Orton, also Panguitch. Leading to the conclusion of the series, the Panguitch Bobcats defeated Kanab 54-42, going into the final game against Piute where they lost 55-49, settling for a second place in the tournament. The eight teams participating were Bryce' Valley, Escalante, Piute, Valley, Parowan, Wayne, Kanab and Pangutich. |
