When the winter chill disappears and the stiff breezes of March take over, the thoughts of Americans both young and old often turn to kite flying. It's a carefree and exciting pastime for spring. But this popular pastime should not be too carefree. The choice of kite flying area is important. The site should be open and free of snagging tall trees and power lines. Preferably, it should be away from water. A downed kite in a pool is a temptation to a small child who may not know how to swim. Small children should be supervised by an adult when flying kites to avoid this and other dangerous "rescue missions. " Metal, no matter how lightweight, should be avoided in the construction of the kite, and the guiding line from the user to the kite in the sky should be of a non-metalic substance. Should your kite fly further than anticipated and land in a precariously .tall tree or a power line, le it them. Don't risk serious injury on a kite rescue mission.
