HL Pauline Pollock, left, student at Bryce Valley Elementary School, gets first place cash prize Garfield County Schools are participating in the 1977 district, regional state and national spelling bee program, with the Garfield District and Regional Three contests being under the direction of Mrs. Etty Hopkins, Tropic. The local school spelling bee hps ' been held in Bryce Vallev and Escalante and will be held in Panguitch and Antimony. Bryce Valley's winner was a sixth grader, Pauline Pollock and the winner in Escalante was Alan Bailey. John W. Barker, St. George is sponsoring the awards for the district and regional spelling bee contest winners. Any citizen desiring to contribute to the from LaVern Jolley of PTA after Pauline won the school's spelling bee. Spelling Bee Winners To Compete in Region Meet prizes for the winners can do so by sending a check or money order to Betty Hopkins, chairman of the spelling bee contest and the money received will be divided between the district and regional winners. "Hopefully this can become a yearly event," Mrs. Hopkins excitedly said. She added this is a great step in having the community become involved in the Educational programs of the district. The district contest will be held in Bryce Valley for the winners of the Garfield County School District schools, Escalante, Bryce Valley, Panguitch and Antimony. The Region Three contest will also be held at Bryce Valley. The Region will include winners from Garfield, Kane, Washington, Iron, Beaver and Millard Districts. The Regional winner will attend the state spelling bee to be held in Salt Lake City, April 29-30. The state contest is sponsored by Deseret News, Utah Education Association, State PTA and State Board of Education. Winner of the State Spelling Bee will win an all-expense paid trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C., June 6-10. |
