Show Panguitch Pulls Upset Of Week Over Piute in Region 8 Action Panguitch High School's up-and-coming Bobcats pulled off the upset of the night in Region Eight 1-A basketball action Friday. The Bobcats, a team laced with sophomores and juniors and coached by Kay Englcstead. son of the 111 Ray Englestead, the regular coach, toppled Piute 59-48. That puts Panguitch (4-3) within striking distance of the second-place Thunderbirds (5-2). In other Div. II games. Bryce Valley topped Valley 56-52 and Escalante sneaked past Wayne 57-53. Beaver busted Enterprise 53-42 and Gunnison slipped by Milford 59-53 in Div. I games. Aggressive, pressing defense neutralized Piute's outside shooting and paced the way to Panguitch's win over the Thunderbirds. The Bobcats got hot midway through the second quarter after Piute moved out 'of a zone defense in favor of a man-for-man. Piute did close within five points late in the third period before the Bobcats moved out agaia Kevin Frandsen (14), Jeff Owens (13), Dennis Henrie (13) and Gary Owens (11) were all In double figures for Panguitch. Mike Dalton hit 17 and Bruce Morell 10 for Piute. Bryce Valley kept the offensive pressure on Valley, and iliaJJuttaldes'' 'owii offense wilted midway through the third quarter. Until that point, Valley stayed within striking distance. Martin Ramsey had a hot Jiand for the undefeated Mustangs, especially in the second half. He finished with 23 points. Layne LeFevere chipped in with 16 more and Klin Shinot handed 14. Dependable Brad Lamb and Steve Heyborne led Valley with 18 and 15 respectively. A waync County press in the fourth quarter backfired, and the Badgers ended up dropping their seventh consecutive league game. Escalante had better luck with the press, and turned a two-point deficit at the end of the third quarter into a ten-point lead with four minutes to play. Sloan Porter and Noel Lyman shared scoring honors for Escalante. Each hit 16 to go along with Scott Steed's 10. High honors for the game went to Wayne County's Brad Brinkerhoff with 19. Jan Ellett hit 12 for the Badgers. A kindly gesture to graduating seniors in their last home game almost backfired for Gunnison. The Bulldogs started all seniors in the second half after building a 34-26 lead in the first two quarters. Milford came surging back to , take a one-point lead as the final period began. The Bulldogs did get their starters back into action in time to turn the game back in Gunnison's favor. Bulldog Curtis Jensen pumped In 20 points to lead all scorers. Teammates Robert Childs and Greg Hill added 10 more each. Mike Mayer was the only Milford player in double figures. He finished with 16 points. A rally just before the second quarter ended provided the momentum for Beaver in its victory. Roger Don Marshall started hitting midway in the period to break open a tight game. "We didn't play very well, and neither did they," losing Coach Stan Holt said. "I just kept expecting someone to break out of the doldrums, but neither team never did." Marshall finished with 15 points for the Beavers to go with 12 by Dean Eyre and 10 from Steve Lowe. Larry Phelps hit seven field goals on the way to 17 Enterprise points. Dixie and Cedar High Schools warmed up for their Southern Utah 3-A Region 11 showdown next Friday in St. George with impressive practice-game victories. Dixie whipped Wasatch 78-59 and Cedar clobbered Hurricane and never let up. The Redmen, who have moved up to 3-A competition this year, avenged what they considered a poor performance earlier in the year when the Tigers extended the larger school before losing a close contest. Cedar City led by 34 points, 80-46, going to the final eight minutes. Five Redmen, including Scott Burns, who returned to the lineup after sitting out six weeks with an ankle Injury, scored in double figures. Steve Hair led the way with 22, Charles Judd hit 17, Brad Blackner 16, Burns 14 and Brent Foley 10. Melvin Bllard scored 12 and Alfred Stuck! 10 for Hurricane. Dixie lost last time to Cedar City, and looks to extend the series to a rubber match with a win at home next week.
