Show Passing of Philadelphia Elms. Another of tho old trees in Independence Inde-pendence squaro has succumbed to tho dry rot of ago and been felled by tho woodman's axe. It Is believed that it was ono of tho 100 trees planted by Gcorgo Morgan In tho squaro In 1785. All wero elms, brought to this city from Now York stnto at tho suggestion sugges-tion of Samuel Vnughan, who took an especial Interest In tho squaro. The number of largo trees In Independence Inde-pendence squaro has of Into years been much reduced by death, decay and storm. The last signs of llfo In tho elm which has Just been felled wero noted last summer. It was a noble specimen of its kind, being about threo feet In diameter and between sixty nnd soventy feet high. It will require many years for tho mnjorlty of tho trees In tho square, among which Is tho young elm planted by Gen. Grant, to rench this size. Philadelphia Phil-adelphia Public Ledger. |
