Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 20 Volume VI, Issue VI July 1, 2002 Early Summer 2002 Forest Service Campground Status Summertime is finally upon us, and it’s high time to gather up the kids and the camping gear and head to your favorite camping spot. This Memorial Day always promises to be the first of many busy weekends on the national forests of Utah. Most lower elevation campgrounds are open throughout the state. Higher elevation roads and campgrounds may still be snow covered or muddy so to protect natural resources please be careful and only drive or camp on dry, solid surfaces. Off-Highway vehicle users are reminded to ride only where permitted, and to obtain the Travel Plan Maps for the areas. Safety is always a concern, so please be careful with children around lakes and fast moving streams. As always please be careful with fire, and make sure campfires are dead out before leaving the campsite. Most importantly, enjoy you national forests! The following is a listing of Forest Service campgrounds that will be open. Ashley National Forest (435)7891181 All campgrounds on the Ashley will be open with or without water and fees will be charged. Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area (435) 784-3445 There is no use fee required if staying in a developed campground. Anvil boat ramp will be closed due to low water levels. Visitors using the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area will have to pay a use fee. Day passes are $2.00, 16 day passes are $5.00, and annual passes are $20.00. Passes are available at Forest Service Offices in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Manila Utah; and in Evanston and Green River Wyoming; and local businesses in and around the Flaming Gorge area. Dixie National Forest (435) 8653700 With less than normal precipitation for the year, most of the Dixie National Forest campgrounds are open, and will charge fees. Honey Comb does not have water, and no fee will be charged. Navajo Lake and Spruces are open after June. Fishlake National Forest (435) 896-9437 Most campgrounds were open with water and fees. Kents Lake is open. Maple Hollow is closed at this time. Elkhorn is passable, but may not have water. Flat Canyon Campground will not be open due to snow. Potters Campground will be open. North Skyline should be open by the holiday weekend. South Skyline is not open due to snow. Visitors are asked not to travel on muddy or snow covered roads, in order to minimize damage to road surfaces. All reservoirs are extremely low. Joes Valley and Electric lake boat ramps are not accessible. Visitors will have to portage canoes or craft to the lake. No driving is permitted on the lake bottoms. Unita National Forest (801) 3425100 Heber Ranger District: Most campgrounds were open, except Mill Hollow and Wolf Creek. Lodgepole will open July 12. Current Creek is inaccessible from Lake Creek. Most high elevation roads and trails are muddy or snowpacked. Co-op Creek is closed until June 30. Beginning Memorial Day weekend, the Strawberry Visitor’s Center will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Boaters are urged to use caution, and to be aware of floating debris and submerged land structures in all the lakes and reservoirs. Pleasant Grove Ranger District: All campgrounds were open for the holiday weekend, and fees are now being charged. The Alpine Scenic Loop opened Friday, May 24. Many of the higher elevation trails and roads are snow packed and/or muddy. A recreation pass is required for the American Fork Canyon-Alpine Scenic Loop area, and is available at Forest Service offices or at the entrance stations to the Scenic Loop. The special use fee is $3.00 for a three-day pass, per vehicle, and annual passes are also available. Spanish Fork Ranger District: All campgrounds opened by Memorial Day. The Mt. Nebo National Scenic Byway is not open all the way through due to a snow slide. Antiquing Canyon is also closed due to a snow slide. Wasatch-Cache National Forest (801) 524-3900 Logan Ranger District: Most campgrounds were open, with water and fees. Guinavah-Malibu, Wood Camp, Friendship and Spring is now open without water or fees. Ogden Ranger District: Most campgrounds are now open with water, trash collection, and fees. The only exceptions are the highest elevation campgrounds such as Monte Cristo and Willard Basin. Salt Lake Ranger District: All campgrounds were open. The newly renovated Redman campground in Big Cottonwood canyon is now open. Evanston Ranger District: East Fork, Bear River, Stillwater, Wolverine, Christmas Meadows, Hayden Fork, Beaver View, and Sulphur Campgrounds are all accessible, although some may be muddy, or may have some remaining snow. Mountain View Ranger District: All campgrounds open on the district, although without water and garbage collection. Fees will be charged if a campground host is present. Kamas Ranger District: All lower elevation campgrounds open, including all the campgrounds up to, and including, Cobblerest, which is open without water. SmithMorehouse and Ledgefork is also open for camping. Visitors parked or camping along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway must display a fee pass. Passes are available at the district office, several self serve tubes along the highway, and at several local Kamas merchants. Day passes are $3.00, 7 day passes are $6.00, and annual passes are $25.00. Passes can be purchased at Forest Service Offices in Ogden, Salt Lake City, and Kamas Utah; Evanston, Wyoming; and local businesses in Kamas and Evanston. Higher elevation roads/trails may not be accessible due to snowy/muddy conditions. The Mirror Lake Highway (USR 150) is now open from Kamas, Utah to Evanston, Wyoming. If you are planning to use livestock on National Forest lands, remember that you are permitted to use only certified weed free straw, hay or pellets. For current road, trail, and campground conditions, please call the Forest Service Office that manages the area you are planning to visit. For OffHighway Vehicle information, please call for the most current information about which roads are open or closed to OHV’s. When hiking, always carry extra water and food, and take along a coat in case the weather turns. Enjoy your National Forests, and please be safe.
