Show THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 6 Volume VI, Issue VI July 1, 2002 Ogden Pathways Hike a Great Success! Ogden Valley Pathways recently sponsored a trail etiquette hike. One hundred fifteen sixth grade students from Valley Elementary School were given the opportunity to explore the North Arm Trailhead led by Pathways volunteers and Forest Service personnel. Students hiked in groups of about 28 on four different days. They had the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, scenery, learn trail etiquette, and walk a trail that many of them found new and exciting. Pathways donated the busing costs as well. Students and parents donated a lot of smiles and some exercise! Some excerpts from students’ written responses are as follows: Dear Ed, Rhett, Rita, Barbara, Deborah, and Emma the dog: “Thanks for taking us and building this trail. I liked it! The view of the reservoir was awesome from some places.” “Thank you for all of your effort. I hope you make some more pathways.” “I really enjoyed it. I learned a lot from Barbara. I’m going to take my sisters and dad this summer. I am very excited!” “I loved how we were able to get away from the busy highway. Thanks for all of the maps and stuff.” “Thanks for that trail. It is cool to have a great trail like that to bike all summer long. I learned about stinging nettle, dyers woad, and lots of other plants. I saw the osprey nests in the towers. This is a neat place.” “I appreciate that you took the time to teach us about all the plants and how dyers woad messes things up. I loved the bluebells. I am coming back with my family.” “I think this would be a cool path to ride horses or bikes on. But I won’t come when it would make ruts. I hope we can do this again.” “I’ve always liked natural vegetation. We saw a moose and a snake and lots of birds. It was great to be able to do this during school! P.S. I even saw a little gopher.” “This was a great way to find out more about nature. I’m going to keep pulling dyers woad.” “I want to speak for everybody and say that this was way fun!” Well, a success and a great learning opportunity! Student Essays on Their Ideas on Ogden Pathways Here are some reasons why I think we need a pathway in Ogden Valley. I would like to walk my dog to the park. And to be able to rollerblade to the lake or to scooter to the library. I feel like other people would benefit to have a pathway in Ogden Valley too. Elderly people could go on walks without cars speeding by. And young Mothers would like to push their baby strollers on a safe trail. Students on the track team would be able to have an area to run. Having safe pathways around the Valley would cause more people to ride bikes or walk to where they need to get. Which would mean less traffic on the roads. These are my reasons why we need a pathway in Ogden Valley, I hope you think so too! Jessica McDonald 5th grader at Valley Elementary Are you worried about your kids on bikes or your exercising? Well here’s a new thing for you. The Ogden Valley Pathway is the best thing for you. It’s good in many ways. And it’s also healthy in many ways. Read on to find out more. We need the pathways for exercise. We’re not the only ones who need them, our animals need them too. It’s really good Trever Knighton 3rd grader at Valley Elementary The pathways committee is for a good cause. It is to make pathways throughout the Valley. They could help people get around without having to drive. I think they should be at least four feet wide and should not have very many rocks or sticks on them. They should also be off the road. The value of the pathways is to help people and kids be safe and off the road. They would help people who walk, run or bike. They should be wide enough so if two people are coming toward each other they can pass without having to move off the trail or bump shoulders and wide enough for strollers and horses. If they decide to do the Ogden Valley Pathways, I think it would help everyone. Heather Hogge 4th grader at Valley Elementary Subscriptions available for out of area residents at $18.00 annually.
