Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have that piece of Valley history to Inspirational Thought “When you create peace in your mind, you find it in your life.” --Author Unknown The deadline for material for the July 15, 2002 issue is July 3, 2002. restore and use? There are so many things we could do in that building. We could have a senior citizen center, classes, recitals, community meetings, weddings, family reunions . . . Oh wouldn’t that be wonderful!! So we got busy and formed a nonprofit corporation, elected officers and a board of trustees, and had the building inspected and got an estimate of the cost of repairs. Well, there is a lot of work to be done to bring it up to code, but when people decide to save a treasure, they can get together, pull together and accomplish great things. So an offer of $160,000 was made for the building. That amount, along with the repairs, came to a total of about $400,000. Wow, that is a lot to money. Yes, but if we have some cooperation from the sellers we can set up a charitable trust, or maybe a tax shelter, or even make the purchase on a contract. But the seller said “No.” They wanted $165,000 down and $55,000 in three months. Well, that is asking a lot more than we could commit the people of the Valley to donating by the end of August. So now what do we do? We feel badly that we can’t have our memories back, that there is such a perfect location for a community center, right next to the park. We really did want to have a little museum there. Is it possible that we can still have a community center? Could we still have a museum, a senior citizen center or a social hall? What if we could find a piece of property and build a center to our specifications? We could put up a new building for about half the cost of the Old Red Church. With a little larger piece of property, we could have a little family park. We could move all those little log cabins onto the property to preserve that part of our heritage. This is a big decision and we need community input. Please call us or catch us along the way and let us know how you feel. Please call Wanda Ahlstrom at 745-6716.
