Show Friday, December 24, 1993 ggOTOTOTOTTOOTOTHOTOTOTOT Memories of Christmas SOTggOTTOgggOTgOTgggggggg' by Holly Via Tassell Christmas is a time for family and traditions. Every family has their own unique way of celebrating the Holiday Season. These traditions make happy childhood memories you remember for the rest of your life. Each Christmas has its own special memory. Christmas always reminds me of green marshmallow popcorn my mom makes every year to give to family and friends. One special tradition in my fam- is getting together on Christmas Eve. My aunt, uncle, cousins, family, and I arrive at my grandparents house around 7 or 8 Christmas Eve night. We sing carols and visit with one another. Presents are also exchanged between the families and my ily grandparents. Every year the Christmas Eve family party is different and special in its own way. Being around family members you love is what makes Christmas for me. On Christmas Day, we always get up around 6 a.m. The whole family gathers in my parents room before going downstairs to open presents and see what Santa has brought to us. My dad goes downstairs first to make sure everything is in order. After everything meets his approval, one by one, from oldest to youngest, he calls us downstairs. He or my imom usually films us using the camcorder as we enter the family room. We open our presents and examine our new possessions before going back to bed. Around 11 o'clock my mom always makes Christmas brunch. Throughout the day many relatives come to see us and we visit family, too. Ive always loved Christmas and the loving atmosphere it creates. Im glad the giving season has arrived and look forward to Christmas. Happy holidays! by Esker Palmer Hello, my name is Esker Palmer. I am going to share with you the Christmas experience at my house. , It all starts Christmas Eve. I get home from doing whatever it was that I was doing that day and I spend the next two hours talking my mother into letting me open a present. Then after that, I get to debate which present it is that I can open. You see, I usually want to open my big present and mom wants me to open a smaller one. I usually can't get to sleep until about 11 p.m. Now, typically, I should be the first one up and ready for the day, but I love to sleep in in the morning. So my mother yells up the stairs no later than 7:30 a.m. As I drag myself down the stairs, I realize that it is Christmas. So I wake up pretty quickly. Being that my little brother is only two, he will be able to open presents first. Last year was his first Christmas and I didnt have the chance to watch him open his gifts. Judging from his birthday, he will do fine. Then comes my turn. I open all my presents, and then as quickly, as it started, it is over. The adrenalin has taken its course and I am back to normal. After my parents open their gifts conies the fun part cleaning all the wrapping paper, the boxes, and the popcorn stuffing. The rest of the day is mostly for my parents. They usually have some friends over and mom makes a great big dinner. Mom makes me get dressed, usually pretty nice. This I am not fond of. I would rather just stay in comfortable clothes and watch football. But I get dressed for her, and my family and whoever we have invited over have an early dinner. After cleaning that up is when we get to kick off our shoes and relax. Ahhhh! by Codlann Osgathorpe Every year around this time of the year, there are miny people in the giving Christinas spirit but then there are many people in the spirit all for themselves! All that these people care about is them, what they get, how much they get, and if they receive more or less than others. Then there are the people who get nothing at all, the people who are not even remembered each year. The people who have been kicked out of the homes, had a bad childhood, took a few too many wrong roads, and just never got accepted and didnt ever mcpive the chance to be loved or cared for like we are! Some of these people may not have eaten for days, weeks, or . maybe even up to a month. They never get a good healthy meal, maybe a scrap here or there, off the streets or out of a garbage can, but nothing like you and I! These poor people are sick, lonely, unhappy, and can be hateful or the way that life has been for them, and maybe there is something that we can do to help these kinds of people. For they need someone to love and care for them just as we have been getting for years, that they havent gotten for years. Feelings, needs, wishes, and wants are common things that we want that they want and need too, and especially at Christmas time. If there is one thing that I could wish for, I would wish for the goodness to come out of people and for them to share it with someone else who is less fortunate than you! Think of how much you could maybe change the life of someone who is without all of the luxuries and pleasures that we have. This is the time of year to give so lets give. You make such a good impression that they may see something that they haven't seen before and it may make that person decide to change their life totally all the way round. Just the tiny and simpliest things may make all the difference. If you have an opportunity to make things better for someone else, or to help someone in need than why dont you? Time are many people who need our help, and I dont see any reason to why we shouldnt take the time to do so! Please help a needy, for without you, they may not make it as long as they should be able to. Please help! Have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Years! by Spencer Neff When I used to tell other people my own age about this family tradition, they would almost always tell me that they were glad that they didnt have to do it but I enjoy the tradition. Every Christmas morning, after Santa has finished his nights work, all of the children in my family hurry in to wake up my parents because no one can go in and open their presents until we are all ready to go. I think thats a good idea so that everyone can be happy when they see the looks of delight and wonder as they open their gifts. To bring all of this about, my parents line us all up on the stairs youngest at the bottom to the oldest at the top. Then when everybody is ready, the youngest goes into a room that is usually empty the rest of the year, but now contains gifts for everyone in the family. Being the oldest, I am last to go in, but I dont mind waiting because having to wait makes the experience that much more enjoyable. As I sit and wait, I can hear all of the shouts of joy from my brothers and sisters when they discover that Santa actually was here! Then when it finally is my turn to go in, it is more fun because I know that the others are enjoying themselves, too. As I said before, some people would think it a pain to sit and listen to all of the others, wondering at the presents but I like it because I get. to see the delight on their faces as they open the gifts and wonder how Santa got into the room. I have . always liked the Christmas season not only because of the presents but because people begin to be more patient and kind toward each other. Christmas is a time when peace prevails and anger and hate fade away into the background. by C.T. Kferkley Every Christmas Eve, we have dinner and after my family gathers together in the living room, we turn off all the lights and light candles and plug in the tree. We sing, laugh, and tell Christmas stories. My favorite story is a poem by Robert Frost and my favorite song is Silent Night. It sounds really good when you sing it in German. We eat treats and drink wassail. Just before bed, we get to pick one present and open iL We go to bed. None of us can really sleep. Then we do. And then get up at four in the morning. We look at all our unwrapped presents, dump out the stockings, and eat all of the chocolate. Chocolate is a must. Then we open all of the wrapped presents and eat breakfast. There are presents everywhere, it takes about one hour to dean up all that wrapping paper and ribbon. Mom and dad play an important part. Moms and dads go through a lot during the Christmas season, and we should be thankful they are there. They buy things, make things, and wrap things. They spend most waking hours preparing everything for Christmas just to make it special for everyone. The thing about Christmas that is special is not the gifts, its the fact you spend a day with those you love the most In any language being together is the most important. Its what makes Christmas so dear. Its being loved and having someone to love. We spend a day as a family and that is what counts most to me. by Sondl Mitchell Christmas is the perfect time for families to get together and share memories of unforgotten moments. In my family, these memories never stop. After we have been to all of our family parties and reacquainted with our relatives, we go back to the house and talk about our past Christmas's when we enjoyed the thought of Santa just a little more than we do now. When we have these gatherings, we always seem to recall when all four of us were downstairs on the nights of our many Christmas Eves. I always had to sleep downstairs with the boys because I would have disturbed Santas work. We always went to bed as early as possible because we were told that the sooner we were in bed and asleep, the sooner Santa would come. We remember how hard it was to go to sleep, but how easy it was to wake up! Every morning, around 5 or 6, we would run upstairs and rush into our parents room and ask dad if it was okay to get up. He usually would tell us that we had to wait 13 minutes, and we would sadly go back downstairs and try to pass the time away. However, if dad said that it was okay, then we had to wait some more for him to see if Santa had made it, and if he did, then we would rummage into the living room and find our pile! Those were the good ole days! If we didnt have memories, I dont think that we would survive! Looking back though, I dont ever remember a time when Santa didnt make it! by Jan Leavitt Many people have their traditions for Christmas. Ever since I can remember, ours has been always the same. It begins when everyone comes to Kamas on Christmas Eve. I remember some years when we would all go tubing during the day. Then, we would all get prepared for the Christmas dinner. Our real tradition was to have it over at Grandma Leavitts house, but over the past few years, we had it somewhere else. Everyone would bring some part of dinner, like a potluck. The main course is always shrimp hard tacos. For those of us who dont like the shrimp, we would have to settle for something else. After everything gets cleaned up, the family gathers around to exchange the family presents. They are mainly donated to the parents and the big family brothers and sister. After the opening of those presents, sometimes we (the grandchildren) get to open up some little present, also. This is depending on the mood of my grandma during the Christmas season. She is beginning to lose her Christmas cheer, and will either get us matching sweatshirts for the whole Leavitt family, or anything simple and easy like that. I remember when she still had that Christmas cheer and would get everyone something different. Times have changed, but we still enjoy presents Grams gives us. After grandma watches everyone open presents from her, we hand all of our presents to her, and she has her fun. Then we discuss the family and any changes occurring and say our goodbyes. The tradition for waking up at 4 a.m. is gone now, and s lot of the time our parents come and wake us up. Another tradition that is only a memory now is Santa. Santa never comes to our house anymore. Mr. and Mrs. Santa don't buy much; more for us than what we already have under the tree. They have lost much of their Christmas cheer, also. Most of the time, they send us to bed right after the family party, and you can hear Santa upr stairs walking around for about two minutes, trying to get it over with so he can be back in bed with Mrs. Santa by 10:00. Another change is the number of people in our family is quickly decreasing. Christmas morning, we wait for a phone call from one of the absent siblings. I suppose that if we are lucky this year, we will get a visit from another sibling that has moved on. That ends our Christmas season. by Jill Atkinson My favorite Christmas tradition began before I was even born, but the ones that I can remember are great memories. Since everyone has started to go their own way this tradition has somewhat dimmed out. Every Christmas Eve, we would all gather at my Grandma Oras house to visit, to eat, and to open presents that we had drawn names for. When we all arrived, the women would all help in the kitchen, all of the men would herd to the couches, and all of the children would dart towards the presents under the tree. It always seemed to take forever for the food to be prepared, for the adults to finish their meal, and for the adults to clean up afterwards. I think that they did that on purpose, though, just to annoy the little kids so that they would have to wait longer to open their presents. But the time finally arrived and it always annoyed me because they would always insist that we open the presents starting with the youngest and working our way up. It was always so much fun open their Christmas presents and watching their faces light up. with joy. After everyone had received their nice, new gifts we were all getting so tired and everyone was so anxious for Santa to come that we would all retire to our homes. Then in the morning, we would always get up so early and rush to open our gifts from Santa. Then after awhile we watching others would go down to my Grandma and Grandpa Atkinsons for a great Christmas breakfast and to open our gifts. Then I will always remember we would all come home and go back to bed. My favorite Christmas memory happened at the Christmas Eve Party when one of my cousins had drawn my name. Of course, their mother wrapped my gift but she did not wrap it with normal wrapping she wrapped it with conpaper tact paper. It took me approximately 13 minutes to finally get my gift opened. Looking back it was quite funny, but at the time I was quite upset. by Corianne Freestone have very fond memories of Christmas. It is my favorite holiday and is very special to me. I always remember Christmast as a special time with a lot of giving u around because we were just rowdy in the car u we were in the house. When we got back from looking at the lights, it wu getting late so all the kids were anxious to get to bed so Christmas would get here faster and they could open presents.' But before any of us would go to bed, we would be sure to leave a plate of cookies and a glare of milk for Santa. Then we would hurry and get to bed. We would always get up early we could to go open presents. But no matter how early we would get up, we would always have to sit in the kitchen with the front room door shut and wait for all the older people to get up slowly. Then finally, they open the door and we go into open our presents. The first thing we always checked wu if the cookies were gone and were always surprised when they were. After opening our presents, we would go over to my Grandma Beers to eat breakfast and open more presents. And that is my favorite Christmas memory. u u 9A The Summit County Bee by Julie Blazzard All of the family had gathered into grandma and grandpas house. It wu packed with people of all ages off doing their own little things. The women were in the kitchen busily working to prepare the Christmu Eve dinner, while all of the men were watching television or cracking jokes in the other room. The kids were in the family room playing pool trying to pass the time. The air was filled with noisy confusion the family sat down for dinner. Everyone settled down and started into their own conversations while they ate. The tables u were filled with everything that could be imagined. Laughing could be heard throughout the meal, and afterwards the dishes were cleared and everyone sat in the front room and began talking not paying too much attention to the young children in the other room. It was around 9:30 when the night slowly came to an end. It was a cold Christmas morning when a young Riri crawled from her cozy bed. She made it into her brothers room and woke them up. They made a lot of noise trying to disturb those still sleeping so that they would hurry and get up. Finally, all seven family members were up and were gathered into their parents room for prayer. After the prayer, they began to make their way into the living room with great hopes and expectations rising. Taking turns opening each present created great impatience in the two youngest members of the family. Finally, the last present was opened and the assembling and trying-o- n began. When everyone was through looking through all of their gifts, they decided to head next door to see what their neighbors had received. The door to the house was opened and snow came gushing in. It had snowed all night and now, the skies were a clear blue. As the small girl stepped into the snow, it covered her up to the middle of her waist. The sun was bright and blinding as it looked down upon them trudging through the snow. The family visited aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents, enjoying each others company, creating another Christmas memory. Merry Christmas and a Happy Hew year To Mil 1 and happiness. I am always the first of the kids to get up on Christmas morning. I set my alarm but I never wait for it to go off. As soon as I wake up, I leap out of bed in excitement and run in to wake up my brothers. They just roll their eyes and pretend to go back to sleep. I guess they think that they are just too cool or something. My mom always goes downstairs and makes some orange juice for us to have while opening presents. My dad starts a fire and turns up the thermostat so it's warm when the rest of us get up. When I finally get my brothers up, we all go downstairs and have family prayer, then we open the presents. I usually get to open a present first because Im the youngest. After me it goes in turn according to age. My parents dont have many so they open one after we have opened three or four. My parents are very generous and I love them for it. After all the presents are opened, we shower and get ready for guests to come. My oldest brother, Chad, and his wife come over around 12 noon, and we exchange presents with them. Also, Wades girl friend comes over and we exchange presents with her. Sometimes, our grandparents come over or else we go to visit them. One thing that bothers me is that we sometimes have to go to work on Christmas Day. My parents have their own business but they do work for one company that always needs them to work. We cant be too picky though because that work brings us our Christmas. This year will be really strange because my brother, Wade, is on his mission. Christmas morning will just be me, my brother, Jason, and my parents. Its hard to imagine that Wade is away. However, we will call him later that day and our Christmas will be complete! by Derek Beer My favorite Christmas memory is when I wu younger how we would go to my Grandpa and Grandma Tibbits on Christmas and stay overnight. We would always pile up in the car with all the presents. When we got there, we would unload all the presents and go visit my Grandma Beer. Sometimes, we would go drive around all the big houses on the foothills and look at the lights. I think the only reason that they ever did that wu to get us out of the bouse for awhile, or to put all the big presents together. I always felt sorry for whoever had to drive us Public Notices Continued from Page 8A dwellings shall be $21.00 minimum per month for use of not to exceed 12,000 gallons per month, and an additional $.73 per each 1.000 gallons or part thereof in excess of 12,000 gallons used per month.
