She will stand for what she thinks is right' Chipping Away at injustice By Oiane Browning staff writer Most pathways to social change are carved slowly: some deftly some dramatically and some so quietly that their eruption in a community assumes dimensions only in retrospect a quiet death from university enforcement with the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 But before that time it demanded a toll of unrealized opportunity professional women right what she perceived as injustice cut a wide path through many i state mid-194- 0s controversy “lone believed everyone should have the opportunity to develop to the best of their abilities" said Alison Thorne a friend of Bennion’s and an ally for for heightened enlightment and social consciousness in the community As dean of women Bennion was not satisfied with assuming the traditional disciplinarian role of the position She saw her position as one of responsibility in broadening women students’ horizons for their future She organized and brought together the first career conference for women at USU where she introduced students to women holding professional and then at the time nontraditional jobs “She was a good dean of women” Thorne said “She emphasized the importance of education for women How education would help them lead programs and diminutive status for many NELSON HOMES saw in other people’s lives After leaving the university Bennion became a home teacher for the Logan City School District Through her job she went into private homes to teach students unable to attend the public school programs And as antinepotism policy at the university: a policy that Thorne said was introduced in part to remove Bennion from her administrative position The adopted antinepotism ruling prohibited both husband and
