the NCAA championship game on the line Saturday LSU’s magic evaporated Cardinals trailing by 8 at The seventh-ranke- d the half and seemingly on their way to becoming just another in the line of LSU put the Cardinals in Monday night’s NCAA title game against Duke Louisville 31-- 7 has a chance to become the first team to win two national titles in the 1980s “We just tried to pick up the tempo in the second half’’ Louisville coach Denny Crum said “But other than that spell in the second half there was not much difference in these two teams “We were able to run and we were able to play defense during those five minutes And that was obviously the difference" LSU reached the Final Four with a series of upsets having trailed during the second half of all four of its tournament victories The Tigers took a 6 halftime advantage over the Cardinals Saturday That cushion dissolved under a barrage of Louisville fast breaks and Wagner jump shots Wagner scored 22 points as did fellow-seniBilly Thompson as Louisville hit 64 percent of its second-hal- f shots Thompson made 10 of 11 from the field and Wagner dealt out 11 assists “In the first four or five minutes of the second half we were only getting one shot" LSU guard Don Redden said “Ana when we missed our shots Louisville was off to the races That’s the last thing you can let happen against that five-minu- te 44-3- or team" The 17-- 1 Louisville run began after LSU’s John Williams hit a short jumper in the lane with 15:12 to play That put LSU ahead by 4 but over the next 5:06 the Tigers could score only 1 point k baskets by Thompson and Wagner tied the score with 14:37 left and were followed by the critical series of the game ed Fast-brea- LSU missed 4 inside shots on one possession and when Louisville finally got the ball it led to k a layup by Jeff Hall with 13:56 remaining That gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game Once LSU put a stop to Louisville’s spurt the Tigers were faced with a deficit that had become familiar during the tournament This time however the Tigers could not overcome it After falling behind by 10 the Tigers ran off 6 straight points But Louisville's experience and poise paid off down the stretch — just as it did last weekend when the Cardinals fought off challenges by North Carolina and Auburn in the West Regional semifinals and final LSU was hurt most by Williams’ disappearing act during the second half The sophomore forward scored 12 first-hapoints but added only 2 during the second half Redden the fiery LSU guard who was named most valuable player in the tournament’s Southeast Region led his team with 22 points But Redden briefly went cold during the middle portion of the half while Louisville was sweeping from behind Derrick Taylor had 16 points and Anthony Wilson 15 for the Tigers Herbert Crook added 16 for Louisville Hall had 14 and freshman center Pervis Ellison had 11 points and 13 rebounds LSU the 11th seed in its region and the lowest seeded team to ever reach the Final Four finished its adversity filled season with a 2 fast-brea- big-ga- lf 26-1- record The Tigers jumped to an 4 lead before the game was two minutes old Louisville quickly drew even and managed to tie the score seven times in the first half The sellout crowd at Reunion Arena many having paid hundreds of dollars for the opportunity to take part in the spectacle waited and waited for the Cardinals to put on the surge that would finally dispose of LSU But it did not come in the first half Louisville failed to score over the final 3:14 of the first half a Texas showdown between college basketball’s two top teams to advance to the finals defeating Kansas of the NCAA Tournament In winning their 21st straight game and setting an NCAA victory record in the process the No 1 Blue Devils assured themselves a spot in Monday night’s championship game against Louisville Duke 37--2 surpassed the 1948 Kentucky squad for the most victories in a season by a major school That Kentucky team finished at 36--3 The Blue Devils who trailed by 4 points with 4:23 to go were rescued in the final minute by Ferry their reserve big man With the score Ferry was stationed underneath when Mark Alarie of Duke missed from outside Johnny Dawkins then failed on the follow attempt but Ferry was there to lay it in Ferry had a chance to secure the victory but with 11 seconds blew the front end of a left Ron Kellogg who played outstandingly for Kansas then missed from 25 feet with the potential tying shot Tommy Amaker of Duke was fouled on the rebound and made his 2 foul shots to seal the outcome Dawkins led the Blue Devils with 24 points while Kellogg who was limited all week in practice because of an injured arch finished with 22 4 received shockingly little The Jayhawks production from its headline player Danning 71-6- 67-6- 7 7 forward had just 4 points Manning The below his average He and 1 center Greg Dreiling who had 6 points combined for 4 points in the second half before both fouled out Manning and Dreiling were a combined 3 of 16 from the field However Kellogg picked up the slack making 11 of 15 shots Calvin Thompson and Archie Marshall each added 13 points for the Jayhawks David Henderson had 13 points for Duke and Alarie 12 Although the game was marked by a tense finish neither team showed the crispness or power of which it is capable All of which was compounded by foul problems: Dreiling fouled out with 5:41 to go and Manning was gone with 2:47 left 5 with Marshall put the Jayhawks ahead 8:13 to go Duke then reeled off 6 straight points Kansas responded with 6 straight points with Manning concluding the spree with his only basket of the second half Consecutive baskets by Dawkins and Alarie tied it 5 before Thompson hit a fourfold: Basically Simplify simplify simplify and then adapt An observation by offensive coordinator Brian Billick crystallizes the Aggie effort to compress and make clear “You show me a team with an eight- - inch playbook and I’ll show you a team that’s a little bit confused about what it wants to do” he told the coaches As an example Billick asked the coaches to consider "a very interesting down (perhaps in the interests of making a point) “Even with Walsh and the restI’m convinced the best coach in the country is up team in Montana Why? there with an eight-ma- n Because he has to adapt” That brought on Aggie defensive coordinator Fred Bleil whose job it is to cause the opposition to “adapt” themselves right out of their game plan and eventually out of their game “We have a ak philos- ophy” said Bleil to the coaches “That means every day we work inside the 20 (yard line) and when we do we pick up the pace Inside that territory that’s our game that’s when we can make a difference” That pickup in tempo during practi'e he said would be also part of the beat of the game itself "As the game goes on we’re going to get more and more active and aggressive” Bleil said the Aggies would be basic on with just a few formations defense mostly capable of flowering into a bewildering array of schemes But he said there will be times in a zone defense when that receiver will come floating
