government MANILA Philippines (UPI) — A controversial declaration of provisional rule an aggressive purge of mayors once loyal to Ferdinand Marcos and tough cease-fir- e conditions from insurgent groups have put new strains oq President Corazon Aquino’s government Midway through her first 30 days in office the influential archbishop of Manila Cardinal Jaime Sin spoke of a honeymoon for Aquino and appealed to potential critics to restrain themselves But Sin’s call appeared to have been overtaken by events and by Easter weekend he was leading prayers for the government and warning of a honeymoon was ever there judging from what I’ve been getting" Vowing to “cut the cancer out of our political system” Aquino last week abolished the National Assembly and enacted a provisional constitution giving her temporary powers at least as great as those previously held by Marcos “It appears that many Filipinos continue to support the government of Mrs Aquino and openly endorse her moves" wrote Aquino political Jim JohnsonHerald Journal commentator Nines Cacho-Olivar- es “It is this popular support that Mrs Aquino is banking on to stabilize her government and keep the armed and
