down on her enlarged nest of eggs We watched for some time Then this big old Rhode Island Red rooster strutted up and flapped his wings close to the hen She got up slowly as if she were hiding something Now that old hen had been having chicks by that big rooster for a number of years When he saw the colored eggs he could have cracked the sound barrier with Us crowing It was as if he was kicked the hell out of him You never saw such a fight When that rooster left the poor peacock didn’t look half as proud and colorful As the rooster looked back you could hear him crowing and almost hear him saying “Next time I find a colored egg in my hen’s nest all your clothes will be tramped to manure green" I’m sure that poor old peacock never did know why he took that beating Nevertheless
