Show .s Volunteer offers years of service Susan Tanner Holmes Writer Contributing Few people have such a vast positive influence for good on others over such a long period of time as Charlotte A- - Larsen, a retiring member of the USU Extension Homemaker's Council after 24 years of service. Charlotte has been a real asset to our council, said Jo Ann Mathis Ross, USU Extension Home Economist. She is a very creative and positive individual. She has always gone the Second mile when it comes to serving as an adv isory council member. Why has this woman who is now 72 given so much volunteer time? You need to give more than to your church and family. It builds character to give time to someone else, said Mrs. Larsen, who has taught classes for the council on grandmothering, making levies, and other sewing projects. We need to give back a little bit of what we .receive. We need to do things w ithout expecting money for them. By volunteering you earn a little of what you are .getting out of life. One of Charlotte's most popular classes was one on grandmothers. She is known for her M and M days, pie baking days held with grandchildren and even her mini vacations with her grandchildren, said Ms. Ross. My grandchildren have magic eyes, said Mrs. Larsen. They see me as a young woman. We always do things together. When you have grand- children, youre a mother with a sec- ond chance. Her grandchildren love to participate in her schools. Through the years. Mrs. Larsen has taught pie school, roll school, donut school. My 20 year old grandson loves to make the squash pie for Thanksgiving and my 17 year old granddaughter will make the rolls. The USU Extension Homemaking Council works to meet the needs of women throughout Davis County by providing leadership training, seminars and classes on various subjects and organizing and producing much of the Holiday Fair. Eve enjoyed every minute of my work on the council, said Mrs. Larsen. It was exciting to go to the leadership classes at Utah State and then bring the information back to the county. When 1 first started on the council we held a sy mposium at Davis High School for the whole county and taught them many of the things we had learned. The guests would come for the whole day. Today we mainly hold little workshops and give demonstrations which meet the changing needs of todays women and men. Through my travels and visiting with other people in different areas and when I went to teach some of the grandmothering workshops in Salt Lake, we found our Davis County Extension service is head and shoulders above the other counties, she said. I've served with three wonderful home economists. They were all talented. Our present home economist, Jo Ann is the most efficient person Ive known. I really have enjoyed the ladies on the council I have worked with, it's been fun. Charlotte is a delightful person. ' She is always willing to help and contributes a great deal to the Extension, dren and family. Everyone can do a little, even a working mother. You can work in the schools. You can go where your interests are and where there is need. There is always something you can do. We cant do it alone, she said. Charlotte has made a valuable contribution to our council and our county. Her creative ideas, youthful optimism, and energy will be missed, said Ms. Ross. 7-- Miller will complement this festive evening. A tradition for twenty years, the Holiday Show & Sale offers the highest quality two and three her grandchildren.
