Karl Malone, as Stream teams clean up rivers PRICE A few years ago, the Salt Lake County Fish and Game Association conducted a survey to determine the biggest ethics problem facing sport fishing in Utah. Litter was identified as the number one problem. Recent surveys also have revealed a solution to the problem. Utahns, both anglers and non- anglers alike, have expressed great interest in becoming personally involved in cleaning, restoring and enhancing our fisheries and other aquatic resources. In 1994, concerned sportsmen teamed up with the DWR to begin tackling this pollution problem by commitment to making a two-yeadopt and care for Utahs fisheries and other aquatic resources by cleaning up sections of the Utahs streams and rivers. In September 1995, volunteer sportsmen picked up litter and Deer hunt was frustrating for many hunters this year Deer hunting success was projected to be the best in years. For some hunters, it was. But for many, the hunt was frustrating. Dry brush and snow made life tough. As a result, overall reported hunter success was down. I would guess maybe 5 to 10 percent hunter success below what we thought we would have, said Mike Welch, big game program coordinator for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. We were hoping for 30 to 35 percent, but didnt quite make that. Because fewer bucks were taken, its easy to see how that translates into more animals and better prospects next season. A complete assessment of deer herds will be underway in the next few months. Biologists will conduct aerial and ground surveys counting animals to help determine herd size and permit numbers for next year. In other wildlife news, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is asking for public input on a proposal to reduce the trout limit statewide from eight to four. Anglers can keep eight fish on many waters. But, many anglers are now asking to cut the limit so more fish will be available throughout the year.
