I asked. Contributing Writer Uh-hu- Gordon said. you h, cant play with You can only look. Gordons house his big brother, much, for some went downstairs duffel bag, his Asian souvenirs Only it or anything. So we went to and we looked at who didnt smile reason. Then we and looked at his uniforms, some that were on his bed and a few pieces of metal-typ- e junk that Gordon insisted could be made into his gun. I didnt believe him at first, but then his brother came downstairs. On the one hand, there was that whole establishment thing that was going on all around me, with peace marches, draft card flambe and hippies shoving flowers anti-milita- ry down gun barrels. War was the ultimate evil, and anyone wearing a military uniform was the enemy of all mankind and definitely y. But on the other hand, I kind of liked playing army. No, I take that back; I really liked it. I had this really cool wooden gun, complete with bolt action, a fake golden bullet and a plastic bayonet that looked downright dangerous. I used to spend hours by myself playing Combat and Rat Patrol in the vacant lot down the street, blasting and bayoneting countless imaginary Nazis (I know, I know we were fighting a war in Southeast Asia at the time; for some reason my bad guys always had German accents). Day after wipe out day Id single-handed- ly the entire German army. And then Id walk home humming Give Peace A Chance. Contradictory? Perhaps. And yet it was a pretty accurate reflection of what was going on inside of me. I vacillated back and forth between my budding social consciousness playtime and my imagination. Then one day it all became profoundly real to me when my friend Gordon told me that his big brother had just come home from Vietnam. Hes got all this really cool stuff, Gordon said proudly. Hes and the a got uniforms and gun seen. ever youve longest bayonet Thats your gun, isnt it, Roger? Gordon said, pointing to the junk. Joe doesnt believe that thats your gun. Roger didnt even look up. Yep, he said. Thats my weapon. I was a little disappointed. Taken apart like that, it didn't even look as cool as my wooden gun at home. But then I saw the bayonet. It was long and sl6ek and ominous looking. It almost looked like a sword, and Id always thought swords were cool. I said as Gordon genWow! tly picked up the bayonet and handed it to me. It felt heavy in my hands, and holding it made me feel powerful. It also made me wonder something, and I blurted out my question without thinking: Did you ever kill anybody with this? Gordons brother didnt respond for a long time. Then he walked over and carefully took the bayonet out of my hands. The way I see it, he said, this isnt for killing people; its for keeping other people from killing each other. That seemed like kind of a funny thing to say back then. But today I think I understand what he meant. As another Veterans Day has gone by, I think about Gordon and Roger and I remember that this isnt a day to celebrate war and bloodshed; its a day to celebrate peace and freedom. And its a day to honor the men and women who have been willing to wear our uniform not to mention our guns to keep other peoand bayonets ple from killing each other. And to really give peace a chance. Vomit flPpHimnon Citizen's bypassed jail or fine. Dun Those of us, who live in neigh- borhoods bordering Bountiful Blvd. are just becoming aware of the fact that our city council has somehow bypassed us on the issue of the proposed extension of Bountiful Blvd. City officials, certain state legislators and others are pushing hard to make Bountiful Blvd. a major commuter highway in order to ease congestion on and Highway 89. We want to know why there have been no public hearings on this issue. We are concerned about the traffic and unsafe conditions for our children this extension would cause. Bountiful Blvd. is a pedestrian street. Children walk to and from school, bus stops all along the boulevard. We have joggers, walkers and cyclists on the boulevard all hours of the day. We have a city park frequented by families from all over Bountiful. There are homes on both sides of the street. Who is representing the neighborhoods involved in this issue? It appears no one on the Bountiful City Council. This is a wake-u- p call for neighborhoods lining the boulevard to research the facts and demand attention from our civic leaders. Donna L. Smith. Lose apathy! Editor, What should be a very sober time (elections) has become a very passive time in our society. This is a time when we should all be very with the price we pay when we are not totally in control of our actions and desires regarding government. There are few, if any, decisions we make that are more important to individual well-bein- g than those we make concerning the people we vote for and those purposes they support or oppose in our society. Many of us do not understand that government stands in a class apart because, by nature, it is the only organization in society which is legally (under laws made by our in-tu- representatives) empowered to deprive a human being of his life, his liberty, andor his property. If you think about this seriously for a moment, the only way in which government acts, or makes its laws known, is by the use cf force or the threat thereof. Every law tells you what you must do or what you must not do, and every law contains a penalty allowing government to take life, liberty or property from any who disobey. It is a very uninformed person who believes that government actions are no more than voluntary cooperation with no compulsion being involved. The only reason any law is passes is to force those people to obey it who would not do so unless they did so by their own government steps in and threatens these people with death. free will officials wanted to use only voluntary means to achieve their goal, they would use a voluntary organization such as a church, a club, a lodge, or some group. The people who participate in these types of organizations are those who do so of their own free will and pay dues and obey rules by voluntary consent. No one is threatened, compelled or physically punished for participation. When government takes over and makes and administers laws, every person must obey these laws, agree or disagree, and if they we need to wake up. How about funding for additional police protection required by this new 60 acre commercial development off Parrish Lane. We need these men in place as soon as possible, not try to play catch up. We need to be prepared to Walk softly and carry a big stick if we expect to keep our city safe. Incidentally, how many of you have seen the city budget lately. Its your tax dollars that fund this city, and you and I should have something to say about how they are spent. Get involved. refuse, there is a penalty for We all must support government projects and programs even if the laws are immoral and the programs are acts of very questionable value. We are forced to participate in all of the bad and ugly because we are forced to support these programs with taxes at every turn. With the fact in mind that government is exclusively an agency of force and compulsion, we are now more prepared to understand why it is important to know who you vote for and what that person offers to the basic moral nature of all government action. I lived through a real depression when people really went hungry. We helped each other and learned a lot about real needs.
