Oglethorpe In Savannah He had passed two years and almost five months away from his native land ” He left in Savannah a society of 17 members which was the group from which the Methodism of today has grown George Whltefleld took up much of the work of his comrade He served for 30 years and built an orphanage— Bethesda— which stands today a haven for homeless boys The first permanent Methodist house of worship in Savannah wras Wesley chapel at Lincoln street and What is now Oglethorpe avenue It Is standing today after many alterations and 1s used as a private residence Bishop Asbury dedicated It In April 1815 In 1835 practically a hundred years after Wesley $ visit to Georgia the first annual conference of the Methodist church In Georgia met in (Salt Lake SAVANNAH Tribune-Ne- representatives of a great religious body In Savannah they will find them selves surrounded on all sides with thaj which Is hallowed because of Its association with John Wesley They will find public and private buildings bearing on their exteriors bronze tablets placed there by his followers These tablets were unveiled at the Wesley bicentenary celebration in Savannah in June 1903 One was placed on the courthouse to show that John Wesley preached on the site where the structure later was erected by Oglethorpe from May 0 1736 to November 27 1737 Another was placed on the United States customs house to mark the spot where the first public building was erected In Georgia and where Wesley preached his first sermon on American soil March 7 1738 Another tablet Is on the John Wesley hotel It shows that on the spot thus marked John Wesley the founder of Methodism lived 1736 37 on a lot set apart by Oglethorpe for a parsonage The tablet says “Here In April 1736 according to his record was the seoond rise of Meth- odism" Wesley’s activities in Savannah and America have been chronologically described a follows: “Tuesday October 14 1735 embarked for Georgia accompanied by Benjamin Ingham Charles and Charles Wesley Thursday February 18 1736 paid first visit to Yamacraw and Savan7 nah 1738 March Sunday preached first sermon In a rude hut used for a courthouse which stood at the northeast comer of Hull street Dela-mot- te It was presided 1846 Efforts to bring about a consolidation of the two Methodist church bodies have been in vain but at thLs ecumenical conference not alone
