Show Around the Town Ethnic Dining Spots Top List Oriental restaurants have become such an important part of Americas ethnic dining habits in recent years that they are now only second to Italian restaurants in popularity, a National Restaurant Association survey shows. Regional differences, explained Jerry Greenfield of the National Restaurant Association, do make some differences in the final totals, with Oriental restaurants most popular in the New England and Pacific regions and Mexican most popular in the Southwest and Mountain regions. In the survey, more than 3,200 families were asked about their eating out tastes and it was discovered that 31 percent chose Italian restaurants as their ethnic dining favorites, but 30 percent picked Oriental restaurants. Third most popular choice were the booming Mexican restaurants 16 percent favorites, followed by German at six percent and French at four percent popularity. It is now estimated that 80 percent of the countrys restaurant-goers patronize ethnic eating places. Those with incomes of more than $25,000 per year are three times as likely to patronize French restaurants, the survey also Another interesting figure will agree with is that Americans now eat one out of every three meals away from home, and that figure should rise to one out of every two in the 1980s.
