Show Tiie Washington walk Following in Jimmys footsteps by Horace Sutton WHEN PRESIDENT Carter set off on foot after the inauguration and hoofed it to the White House, he not only captured the publics imagination, he created a new tourist attraction. This spring nobody is interested in the cherry blossoms or the Washington Monument. Everybody wants to take the Carter Walk. Visitors to Washington who would follow in the footsteps of the President can walk down the east steps of the Capitol, cross Constitution Avenue and then begin the amble down Pennsylvania Avenue. That broad boulevard where soldiers parade would be a straight shot to the White House were it not for the Treasury Department building which was planted right in the way. The Carter Walk, from the seat of the Legislative Branch to the home of the Executive Branch, is a promenade past some of the weightiest officialdom in Washington. The U.S. Court House on the right is where the Watergate trials were held. The National Gallery of Art with its handsome wing and the Tutankhamen exhibit nobody can get into is just across the street. THE PRESIDENT and Rosalyn, with Amy skipping along beside them, moved past The Dog House. It sells hot dogs but they didnt stop. There is a statute of Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock, a Union hero of Gettysburg, who later commanded the city of Washington and ordered the trial and execution of Booths accomplices in the Lincoln assassination. Looming like a giant hulk on the right, the Carters saw the new FBI Building named for J. Edgar Hoover. Inside, the FBI receives 5,000 visitors a day to whom it offers dramatic shows of its exploits in apprehending spies, bank robbers, and organized criminals. A firearms display is the high point. Handily enough, the Justice Department, where Atty. Gen. J. Griffin Bell maintains order, is just across the street. Visitors who feel a special emotion might wish to place a wreath in front of the headquarters of the Internal Revenue Service, which is next door to the Justice Department on the Carter Walk. THE OLD Pershing Statue honoring the hero of World War I is near the National Theater on the comer of 13th and E streets, where many Broadway shows try out. A sign points to what must be one of the nations most peculiar street indicators. It points the way to 13'2 Street. Off in the background is the old Willard Hotel where Julia Ward Howe wrote The Battle Hymn of the Republic and Abraham Lincoln, the Presidentelect, slept the night before his inauguration. The Willard, like the equally storied Occidental Restaurant which in its day heard so many congressional whispers, is closed. (And the word is that the Carter club does not frequent the Sans Souci, Following the path trod by the Carters on inauguration day will lead you down the concrete path of Pennsylvania Avenue. anti-slave- Carteriana is the off trail General Store on Connecticut Avenue. The old Hotel Washington survives, but Loebs Restaurant, a standby next to Keiths Theater, has added a new item to its fare of pastrami and corned beef. It is peanut soup. Visitors who take the Carter Walk may need a bowl of sustenance by then. The walk has been clocked at a mile and a half. Its Happy Mouth bottle opener, the least genteel of its offerings, is a Carter likeness that lifts the tops off bottles. It has Plains peanut butter, which is trucked up from Plains, and copies of The Peanut Cookbook of Plains, Georgia, which is not to be confused with The Carter Family Favorites by Ceil Dyer (pictures of Jimmy with Miss Lillian facing a recipe for Turnips with Greens). NEW SOUVENIR shops are sprinkled all along the route of the Carter Walk, but the one with the biggest display of The Carters worship at the First Baptist Church of Washington, an edifice of granite blocks at 16 streets, around the r cHawaii I I or e for You I Call or Write (801) 216 South 13th East AGENCY OF PROFESSIONALS Ulah Salt . .
