Show I H Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, April 17, 1977 1 Sleeve bulge is common complaint best done by excess fabnc the figure By Dale Cavanagh jjfc There are certain sleeve problems which almost never show in soft clothes But just when you are tailoring a where the hang of a blazer or jacket the faults sleeve is so important suddenly appear. One such problem is the bulge at the back of the sleeve which appears somewhere between the underarm and the shoulder. It is a common complaint and is a symptom of too much fabric in the upper sleeve back where the bulge occurs The alteration to correct this fault is yl i removing the g the jacket while is on Get Help This is easier said than done unless you have a knowledgeable friend to help. Without help, you have to try on, take off, try on, take off, try on again, ad infinitum, but you can do it alone if you persist. The first thing you have to do is cross mark above and below the bulge with see Fig. 2. pins or chalk Next step is to open the armhole seam between the cross marks plus an inch or so each way Then, working on the outside, turn under more of the edge of the sleeve at the armhole smoothing it out until the bulge disappears, meanwhile pinning the sleeve in place see Fig. 3. Use lots of pins. Place pins perpendicular to the armhole seam and ta,.: up only a tiny thread of fabric on both armhole and sleeve with each pin. Retain Seam Retam original armhole seam on garment but change it for sleeve. Next, slip baste as pinned, then turn inside and stitch revised seam as slip-baste- Finally , tmn off the excess fabric on the inside When you do this, ry to observe how much fabric had to be trimmed away and from where and record this on the sleeve pattern. Then if you use this pattern again, you can make the necessary adjustments as you cut If sewing is an activity you take Sew Tip by seriously, Spadea's World Famous Designers should be as much a part of your home sewing center as p good sewing machine.
