Show Salt Lake Is the Center of Enterprise 0 d e It has been nearly 130 years since that weary band of hearty pioneers struggled through Emigration Canyon and Brigham Young made the declaration, This is the place. aer-- -. theatergoers with drama and musical productions of exceedingly high quality at the University of Utah Pioneer Memorial Theater, Promised Valley Playhouse, Lagoon Opera House and several other small acting companies. Salt Lake City has one of the largest park systems in h the country with of all the land in the city dedicated to 23 parks covering 7,000 acres. There are more than 40 public and private golf courses in the area and public and private tennis courts and tennis clubs abound. The hub of the west has one of the highest home ownerships in the nan tion. Because of the climate, homes are beautifully landscaped and many even have small vegetable gardens in their backyards. Salt Lake is world famous for its wide streets and blocks and the symetrical street design. The University of Utah works like a magnet to attract scholars and researchers to the mountainside campus. W From the first dusty streets and log cabins and raw board store fronts, Salt Lake City has grown into a thriving metropolis that is respected and admired from coast to coast. While many cities across one-fift- the country have gone i through a cycle of growth, stagnation and then regression, Salt Lake City has recently reversed the trend with its downtown renovation project and the determination not to let the business center die. Tourists pass through the city each year by the thousands and many of them pause to take a picture of Eagle Gate with the State Capitol Building rising majestically at the top of State Street and the LDS Office Building gleaming to the left, and they dont realize that when the original gate was installed the roadway was lined with towering shade trees with a blacksmiths shop, a mill and the waters of City Creek running by. From the Brigham Young Monument, tourists and visitors alike can go in any direction and see the signs of a modem city. The Main Street beautification project has attracted critical acclaim throughout the nation with its bubbling fountains, convenient rest benches, shade trees, covered bus stops and kiosks. The three-blocstretch from South Temple to Third South Streets cost over $1 million, most paid by the merchants along the street in an effort, to attract more people to k town. Another factor contributing to the success of Salt n Lake City is the dollar ZCMI Center multi-millio- shopping mall and the high rise Beneficial Tower office building. As you leave the downtown area you find a land of mountain ranges, high meadows, rich pastures, many streams, lakes and per-capi- base meridian surveyors monument. This spot indicates the beginning of all property surveys for the state. You can then walk east along South Temple and take in the Church Office Building, Lion House, Beehive House and Eagle Gate. Going north through Eagle Gate to First Avenue then block you east about one-ha- lf come to the gravesite of Brigham Young. Backtracking just a bit to State Street you go north again to North Temple, veering to the left and then north toward Memory Grove. Along the way you will pass a historical grist mill marker, the Old Firehouse, City Creek Park and Memory Grove. Take the winding trail up the west side of Memory Grove Park and you will find yourself near the Old Council House which was once the seat of Utah government and the current home of the Utah Travel Council. Then it is just across the street to the Mormon Battalion Monument, the Utah State Capitol and the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Museum. One thing that many Salt Lake residents fail to do, unless a friend or relative comes to town for a visit, is to take it the historical walking tour of the downtown area. By spending a couple of hours and a little shoe leather, parents can teach their children much about the pioneer history of the Great Salt Lake Valley.
