Show vr V - NT f HEW Official c. Tile Siill Mr. okaaki told !.:s audience that Utah and the nation face many complex problems from proper education for their children to effective care for elderly women yet they must focus their efforts on a small number of issues if they intend to improve the status of women. "Its better to get one thing done," Mr. Okazaki said, "rather than talking about ail different things. He urged the group to exert pressure on the governor and legislators to approve legislation for women. He also promised the women he would act as an advocate in the HEW bureaucracy for them in cases when they feel their civil rights have hewn abused Regarding the Carter administration's xilicy on women, Mr. Okazaki said. "I think they are very serious about doing something to improve the status of women. He said Carter is very concerned about people who cannot organize and muster the political clout they need to make government respond to their needs, and in many cases these people are women. These people mean business and they're not fooling around" on improving the status of women. Mr. Okazaki remarked. The HEW official added, however, that women must assume the responsibility of defining and striving to accomplish goals. "You've got a lot of work ahead of you," he warned. Edward Y. Okazaki, assistant regional director of the Office of Human Development for HEW in Denver, made the observation Saturday during a conference tilled. "The Mature Woman: Economic and Social Status" sponsored by the Governor's Commis- - Citizens Parley Views Growth Several alternatives to growth were discussed, but no decisions reached at a meeting Saturday of the Citizens Committee Workshop of the Salt Lake County Planning Commission held in the County Complex, 2033 S. State. Members considered three alternatives to growth and development in the county: whether the growth should be basically in the south, the west or by filling in areas still undeveloped within presently developed areas. Another discussion was whether industrial growth should be in an area down the center of the valley or concentrate such growth in the northern part of the valley. A conglomerate of the first three alternatives is being considered by members and might be discussed at the next meeting on a date to be set later.
