Show Busy Year Forseeri for Utahs Contractors Last year was a good construction year in Utah This year will be another good one. Of course, there are question marks. What impacts will the drought have ? In fall and early winter, the superb weather permitted construction projects to go ahead smoothly. But the water shortage could hurt, warns Jerry Thorn, president of the Utah Chapter of the Associated General Contractors. 400 Members The AGC in Utah has 400 member firms general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers of materials and services. They do most of the major commercial construction in Utah. Overall, 1977 should be good year, Mr. Thorn says. And for those with projects in mind, now's the time to advertise for jobs. A lot of contractors are looking for work. Expectations: As usual, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints has had a steady building program while public and private work tends to fluctuate. LDS Projects The church will probably be doing about $20 million in ward and stake construction. It is adding to its Language Training Mission center at the Brigham Young University campus. It also is renovating the Logan Temple as part of an overall temple renovation program. One of the brightest spots is in public works. The Federal Title I public works fund will generate $10 million this year to stimulate the economy and get people on jobs. Major Projects Some major projects include $2 million of work at Ft. Duchesne, $2 million at Ogden and $1.6 million at Salt Lake City. And more could be forthcoming. For example: Theres a lot of water and sewer work to be done. So far this year, the Environmental Protection Agency has directed $17 million to Utah for water and sewer projects. Another major plant The states cities and towns have water and sewage line projects that could total near $17 million. Source of Work Hill Air Force Base has been a consistent source of renovation, repair, and construction contracts. The base expects to build an aircraft maintenance hanger this year for near $3 million. The base will probably be advertising several construction jobs by years 1 end. The contractors had looked to the possibility of a major contract to breach the Southern Pacific causeway to equalize the north and south arms of the Great Salt Lake. The legislature, however, took no action on the causeway issue. Nor did it take any action on a proposal to build a road to the south end of Antelope Island to procure westward and for the fill material for building belt route. northern part of the Denied Tax tax on It also declined to add a which would have provided additional funds gasoline for road construction and repair. As for state construction, few if any major buildings will be put out for bid. Indications now are that most of the state capital improvement funds will be used for alterations, repairs and improvements. Contractors, architects and engineers have suggested that the state have a revolving fund for these alterations and repair projects. View is that the state will lag behind in its building program unless major projects are undertaken each year. Medical Center One of the major jobs anticipated is the addition to the University of Utah Medical Center. This would be included as a project to be supported by the $70 million bond issue passed by the 1975 budget session of the legislature. Expectations are the contract would be in the $30 million range. The contractors have been anguished by what they call stop and go Toad blocks in highway construction.
