Show W ater Shortage Pervades Outlook For Area Farmers and Ranchers Continued From Page 12 The national forecast is that large supplies of crops and livestock will go to market in 1977. Increased domestic and export demand may take care of some of the excess. But prices will probably show some decline. Agricultural export dollar volume is expected to increase to $23 billion. Domestic demand is up as well. So if prices go down in 1977, the change will not be drastic. Though not good, this is better than it could be. As for the prices farmers have to pay: Prices will continue their upward trend, but not as fast as in recent years. Land Values Up Land prices also appear to be increasing at a slower rate. Interest on loans are expected to stay at about present levels. But farm debt will go up, as farmers and ranchers refinance to cover operating losses. The drought may well cost production. That means less money for the farmers and ranchers to meet expenses and debts. Beyond 1977? More favorable! Demand for agricultural will expand as more people buy more. And supply will remain products fixed or even lower the result of loss of agricultural land to urbanization and other uses. For all practical purposes, the breaking of new crop land in Utah has stopped. Irrigation development will increase production from the fixed supply of land. But new irrigation development depends on the availability of funds. Economics of Situation The supply and demand situation means higher prices in the long run. But so will agricultures costs rise. The relationship of prices and costs will determine what happens in the future. Historically, farmers have 1E!M NEW AND USED AND LARGER IN STOCK 2-T- DUMPS responded to higher pnces with increased output. With the increase in demand, the current down pressure on prices will be less. And the main concern will turn to the increasing costs of production. Cost of fuel and power, for electricity, for example are increasing, and it appears they will continue to increase. 1 PACKERS West's Largest Selection The OVER STOCK RACKS FLAT BEDS MIXERS ,000 CARS & TRUCKS TO CHOOSE FROM Weve got your truck Thus, farmers will become even more cost conscious. In the name of efficiency, the number of farmers will decrease. Larger, more efficient farms, will be operated a like a a business to provide food and fiber for the consuming public at less cost than their counterparts anywhere in the world. Citrus Study L Computer Oranges? jfiftmt Gfcon KJtchenM rn LITTON CHICK HILLIER FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) A computer attached to several citrus trees in a field near here is collecting data that may lead to better and cheaper orange juice, a agriculture officials say. The computer and other equipment housed in a truck trailer are part of a study to find out what types of citrus plants do the best job of Photosynthesis, the way a plant uses sunlight to make carbon molecules. According to Hartwell Allen of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the quicker the molecules are produced, the faster the plants grow and bear fruit. Carbons are the building blocks for growth, Allen said. So when Anita Bryant sings about the Florida sunshine tree, she is scientifically accurate. Four leaves on each of the trees are placed in teflon chambers. The plastic tubes carry air to the chambers, which are regulated and monitored by the computer. SAYS REMEMBER! It's a Fact!
